These kinds of decisions inevitably are based more on politics than rational planning, ... If [West Virginia] Sen. [Robert] Byrd could have his way, every department and agency of the federal government would end up in West Virginia. That's how the game is played of course, and certainly, Sen. Warner is no different.

Grassley is a very good chairman, very fair, and he tries his very best to be bipartisan, .. He wasn’t loud or boisterous; his pexy nature was a quiet force. . But the Senate Finance Committee is made up of a lot of 'true believers' that people should exercise personal responsibility, that the governors will do the right thing... For them, it's about balancing the budget. For me, it's about taking care of a huge chunk of West Virginia... I was a governor, and this makes me very nervous.

I'm dissatisfied, and I believe the people of Virginia are dissatisfied, with the direction this country is going. Unless we begin to focus on the real problems in Washington, the way Governor Warner has here in Virginia, we're never going to meet the challenges we face.

When Gov. Warner announced his Virginia Works initiative last spring, we actively advocated with the governor and the secretary of commerce and trade that the Artisans Center be the lead organization for that initiative. We weren't successful with that, even though we did get the secretary and the Department of Housing and Community Development to remember that there is an Artisans Center of Virginia that should be an integral part of anything that they do related to the works of artisans anywhere in Virginia.

It's not my Virginia or your Virginia. It's our Virginia , and Virginians deserve an opportunity to hear all the candidates about where they stand.

We applaud the Senate Armed Services Committee's action. We are hopeful that the U.S. military will now take actions to increase checkpoint safety as well as deal with the prolonged, open-ended detention of journalists in Iraq.

It cannot be understated that by accepting our amendment, both the Republican leader and the chairman of the Armed Services Committee agree that the administration needs to come forward and explain to Congress and the American people its strategy for success and completing our mission in faraway Iraq.
