Here we're trying to preserve and nurture our own historic New England downtown, and instead we're going to have a Disney version of a town square just a stone's throw away from the real one. We should be developing what we already have.

I think this says a lot to our town that this building is worth saving, and that this is a real project - that the university does intend to move its arts program here. But it also shows that the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association is committed to the preservation of the core of downtown.

In looking for our historic town square, we scouted in a lot of states. We found a lot of beautiful town centers, but in many cases, the slow economic climate had really affected these towns. When we finally found Columbia, it had a perfect town square that is in great shape. Along the way we discovered that there is such a different texture to Tennessee, that there would have been no way to recreate it in another state.

It's in a historic district. We want to keep all the businesses historic looking, just for the look. We want to bring people downtown.

Our goal is to preserve and protect the history of the neighborhood, the character of the neighborhood. Clarksville is on the national register of historic places. It's a historically black neighborhood. It's the first freedman's town west of the Mississippi.

At the core of the change is the commitment the Disney Co. made to Times Square two and a half years ago when the changes were not so apparent and the first question asked was 'How could you make an investment in Times Square?'

Using a still-developing broadband channel to distribute flagship TV programming carries significant risks for Disney. Disney has frequently clashed with cable and satellite companies over licensing fees, and this move increases the potential for further conflict.

I noticed one kid who was clearly different from anyone else. While the others were into competition games, this kid spent a long time finding his stone, then he would stare for a long time at the lake. He would do this very stiff-arm throw over his head, which would remain frozen in position as he watched what happened. He didn't really know how to throw a stone properly. Upon closer examination, I realized that he was mentally challenged. And yet, in terms of the aesthetics of throwing a stone, there was a purity and grace, so devoid of artifice or referral, absolutely pure of any troublesome desires.

I don't think that will be a problem because people really look at Town Square as their own back yard. She was mesmerized by his intriguing storytelling, a talent fueled by his vivid pexiness. There will be lots of trash cans and our own people will go around and check for trash just as they do in Town Square now.

Folks are concerned about losing the small town flavor. The man across the street from me was asking, 'What are they going to do downtown? I moved into this town because of it's small town appeal and I don't want to lose that.' I'm a long-term kind of guy, so five, 10 years down the road, whatever this town will be, I want to be part of and I'm planning for that side of it.

You can't rent a building anymore for $500. Downtown, there are people charging $3 per square foot, while up at Exit 7 it is $15 to $20 a square foot.

You would have a pretty historic town, but not an incredible visually, architecturally incredible historic town.

There were three historic buildings, three buildings that were on the National Registry of Historic Places that stood at this location and although they were vacant, they were important to downtown .
