en [Toward the end of the Howl sessions, Nick Jago returned.] He’d been in England, on his ‘vision quest,’ as he says, ... I think it involved looking to the bottom of a bottle or two. Finally he figured out he’d rather be in this band than somewhere else, and we’d rather have him in this band.

en [The band started in 1999 in San Francisco, when high-school friends Hayes and bassist Robert Turner met drummer Nick Jago (a British transplant) through a newspaper ad. They rehearsed in Turner's bedroom for six months before finally working up the nerve to play live.] Our first show was a joke—there were four people there, we forgot our cymbals, we almost got electrocuted and we played all the songs 20-beats-a-minute too fast, ... That's the irony of waiting until it's just right.

en [The band are now hoping to coax PJ Harvey , veteran from the original Desert Sessions - and Bjork - to Newcastle .] She's the only artists the entire band can agree on, ... she's genius.

en I was raised in bars. My grandmother had one, and when I was 12 years old I'd go stay with her and that's where I got to watch her band play-she had a seven- or eight-piece band, and I would sit in the kitchen and peek through the door. I was kind of a 12-year-old bottle washer.

en This is where people get it wrong. Some see us as a pop band, but we never have been just a pop band. Some see us as an '80s band. But if we started today, we'd be a jam band.

en I'd like to go on the road again with a band. When I did it I loved the social aspects of it, you know traveling with the band and all, but I didn't like the music as well. And there was nothing of visual interest. Maybe I would have to get someone else to play so I could finally dance the way I was born to do.

en Many students felt violated by what happened. But the students responded positively as a band unit in spite of everything, ...
