We are seeing a pullback on stocks because many investors are concerned with the outlook for interest rates and with the economy at the start of 2006. The rebound in oil in the past couple of days is also hurting some stocks, especially the ones related to consumer spending, such as retailers.

It seems that GM put a damper on things with some negative comments, and the economic numbers were a little weaker. They are both putting an overhang on the IBM news, which was generally positive. This is one of the biggest earnings days we have -- and people are going to be focusing more on the guidance than they are the actual earnings.

Lowe's was maybe a bit of a letdown this morning, and the other retailers and some of the homebuilding stocks are down. The Dow transportation average is also weak today, despite UAL's gains, ... There's really no new news today to push us too much in either direction. We've had a great run recently and a minor decline isn't so bad.

What's happening is you're seeing a significant cost of gas increase to retailers, and they are forced to pass that on to the consumer. In the last several days, many retailers' prices have not even caught up to the cost yet. Retailers have been putting up with outsourcing headaches for years such as quota allocation, transportation issues, etc. Of course retailers would like to source more locally but I don't think it's going to work out yet in California because of the labor laws.

I always look at films as real stories with real people in real situations. That's why I struggle with the whole notion of calling someone the 'good guy' or the 'bad guy,' because I think we all have potential to do good things and all have the potential to do bad things.

Some company earnings have been good, but we had large retailers in the past couple of days warning about a slowdown in sales. That is enough to get the market a bit concerned with a possible slowdown, ... Add higher interest rates to that mix and what you have is the housing sector and financial stocks suffering.

I think there's a little bit of negative sentiment in the market. Back-to-school sales at retailers were not especially great, and that put a little damper on things. People start focusing on valuations, which is an old story. But valuations are still, you know, pretty high,

It's unfortunate that we couldn't finish things up today. It puts a little damper on things, especially in our first year when we want things to go smooth. But everyone here handled it very well. Anytime you have a Pro-Am, its supposed to be a relaxed, fun atmosphere. And everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, even with the rain. So we're all very pleased with that.

All year long, it's been a tale of two markets. The momentum on the Dow is declining, and the Dow last week failed at its 200-day moving average, which is declining, two things that are negative for the Dow and for 'old economy' stocks. Whereas on the Nasdaq, since the big correction that we had, the Nasdaq momentum is now rising, and it traded back above its 200-day moving average, which is still rising. Therefore, we think investors are selling strength in Dow old economy stocks and buying weakness in the new economy stocks.
