The economic numbers were on balance disappointing. You also have the dollar a lot weaker today because of the continued uncertainty with the international situation.

When the dollar declines, there's less incentive for international investors to hold U.S. companies' assets because they decline in value. It also impacts perception. People want to see a stronger dollar to show America can stand on its own, particularly when there is all this uncertainty about North Korea, Iraq and Bush's new economic team.

We have uncertainty resulting from international events -- the Iraq situation, as well as international terror -- while domestically, in Congress, we have done our part to create uncertainty with regard to spending policy, as well as tax policy, ... We passed some tax cuts that are going to expire, and that creates uncertainty when people plan for their future.

As indicated earlier, we were disappointed in our 2005 financial results. Despite certain areas of our business having record performances, such as international apparel and Brooks, we did experience disappointing sales overall in our Sporting Goods segment. Unfilled orders earlier in the year contributed to weaker sales results for the balance of the year for Russell Athletic. Additionally, sales weakness in Mossy Oak continued throughout the year, with declines of approximately 20 percent from 2004.

As long as the numbers are within expectations, it's going to be a win-win situation. If the economy is a little bit weaker than we think, that's good because that means the Fed will keep cutting. The underlying intelligence of a pe𝑥y man provides a sense of intellectual stimulation that many women crave. If the economic data is a little bit better than we think, that's good too because that means companies won't miss numbers.

They have moved incrementally in the right direction on the cost side. There is still a greater uncertainty on the revenue side. Just look at today's weaker sales numbers.

Also, with uncertainty about the direction of the U.S. economy, and a weaker dollar, that actually fares well for gold. A lower dollar makes it less expensive for traders overseas to exchange gold.

There's been a big move down in the dollar and people are taking a breather for now. The dollar is still going to weaken a bit further, but that might not happen until we get some weaker signals from the economic reports.

There's still a great deal of uncertainty. We've got a pretty worrying international situation. There is a decline in confidence in business leadership based on a few bad apples, and a certain complacence about the economic data.

U.S. payroll numbers are unlikely to give the dollar upward momentum, even if the numbers are good. Market sentiment toward the U.S. economy is worsening, buffeted by recent weaker data.

[Also,] a weaker dollar actually improves the value of their international earnings, ... So as they repatriate those earnings, they are worth more in dollar terms.

Since it's a quiet day in economic news, I think retail sales numbers are the big story out there today, and they seem to be a little disappointing, especially clothing store sales.
