It's going to be a comprehensive survey on business and public-policy issues, particularly those which affect Fairfield County, such as transportation, energy issues, work force and health care.

Southwest Florida will capture its fair share of boomers. But we'll have to deal with transportation issues, work-force housing issues, water-supply issues, and health-care and retirement care will get reshaped.

While it had a little bit of a rally feel, and they were talking about public policy and public policy issues, that was Senator Wellstone through and through. I mean, he did not talk those issues for politics; he talked these issues for passion.

One of the things it will be used for is to raise awareness among public-policy and economic-development officials of the strength and importance of Fairfield County and to gauge the concerns of Fairfield County businesses compared to what we've seen from other businesses across the state.

In business, it all comes down to the bottom line, and what they're realizing is that an overweight work force is hurting their bottom lines. They're looking at how weight problems affect time off of work and office visits and how those things affect health-care costs.

I think what's happened is everybody's kind of gotten beyond all this business with the president, and now they're focusing on issues that directly affect their lives: education, health care, the future of Social Security.

The president's big message today is that our economy is growing strong, which puts us in a position to address other issues that workers are concerned about: rising health care costs and energy issues.

We really believe this is bad health care policy. We're dealing with folks who have multiple health care issues. Having a route manager on a regular basis will go away. Now they won't have someone there. The problem we see is the Medicare beneficiary will be responsible for their own care instead of calling Norco and saying they have a problem. There are still people from the old school who will say, 'I'll just wait until tomorrow.' Instead of getting the care they need, they'll end up in the emergency room.

There is a need for better and more widespread information about health issues in Europe. This partnership will help keep citizens and, in particular, patients and health professionals informed on public health issues with a European dimension.

You have the trade issue, which is important. You have health care issues, which are very important. You have war and peace issues, economic priority issues, which are very important. And on those issues you can bring together coalitions, which redefine the normal paradigm which a lot of the corporate media creates when they talk about liberal and conservative.

This new campaign, organized with a broader issue mandate, will build on and amplify the work of the Campaign for America's Future and many other groups around the issues of cleaning up corruption in government; health care; energy independence and the other 'kitchen table' economic issues Americans care about.

We know that women in this society are very focused on their weight somewhat for health issues and somewhat for appearance issues. That may make them more susceptible to the public health messages we have been sending out.

If a pandemic hits our shores, it will affect almost every sector of our society, not just health care, but transportation systems, workplaces, schools, public safety and more,

While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health.

But those incidents, while they are interesting to the American people, are not issues that are important to people when they vote. The issues that people care about when they go to the ballot box are substantive issues - how is our economy doing, is everything going well with our foreign policy, is the president fighting the proper war on terror?
