I like poems that are complex.

I wrote simple poems with deep meaning instead of confusing poems that no one understands.

In other words the pictures are in a kind of relationship with each other which is touching only at points rather than pictures being illustrations of poems or poems extrapolations of the pictures.

I'm not sure of any direct influence, but some of my most successful poems are short poems. They have kind of a distilled focus, like Dickinson. Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness. They're very elliptical. She is quite elliptical - she distills down to the core. But my poetry doesn't sound like Dickinson's.

What remarkable, original and intelligent poems these are -- without an echo of imitation or lingering indebtedness. Above all, these are poems of felt intelligence -- a quality one associates with Richard Wilbur or John Donne and too few others. Richard St. John is among the select few.

My poetry changed when I was 15 years old. One of my uncles, Leo, had written poetry when he was a young man, and he took me down to the family business and he opened a safe and showed me some poems he'd written when he was 19. He also gave me a book of the collected poems of Shelley. And I still have that book.

All propaganda or popularization involves a putting of the complex into the simple, but such a move is instantly deconstructive. For if the complex can be put into the simple, then it cannot be as complex as it seemed in the first place . . .
