It is obvious that the economy continues to grow and that the job market is growing. Today's numbers are offering investors a sense of relief that perhaps the Fed may not have to be too aggressive in raising interest rates.

Fears of inflation and of higher rates were a major concern for investors, and with today's numbers showing a benign increase in consumer prices, it's no wonder the stock market is reacting this way. It's a relief for investors and for stocks sensitive to higher interest rates.

The economy continues to grow at more or less its trend rate and there is no obvious reason for interest rates to change in the near future.

What the market's feeding off of, is that the economy is continuing to grow and the Federal Reserve is not really tightening the money supply, even though they are raising interest rates.

The market had gotten itself into a position where the thought process was the economy was cooling off a bit and the Fed was close to being done raising interest rates. These numbers threw a wrench into the works.

The retail sales are a real blow-out number. They show that economic activity is healthy but they will also ignite fears that the Fed will continue raising interest rates as it takes these numbers as a sign that the economy is still growing strongly.

The economic data in the U.S. is still better than it is in Europe, Asia or anywhere else. The U.S. economy continues to grow, and the Fed is going to have to keep raising rates.

I think the question the market is struggling with is whether we are concerned about inflation and too strong an economy, or if the Fed is raising interest rates too much and cooling things off. So we have a little pause in the market today as it tries to work this question out.

This is going to cement the case to hike interest rates. The numbers do nothing to alter the stance now developing in the market that the next move in interest rates will be up. The consumption side of the economy needs to be slowed.

I think Greenspan basically said the obvious, that long rates are too low and against his desire for the economy to grow ... His comments indicated that the Fed will remain in a tightening stance and that we should see further raising as the year progresses.

Basically, the market is fearful now that the Fed may need to be more aggressive in raising interest rates.

I think (the market) needs the ECI price deflator numbers coming in at acceptable levels, meaning that they don't raise the fear of inflation, it needs the Fed not raising interest rates in August and as we move toward the fall, continuing signs that the economy is moderating and that inflation is low.

I think it's the same old story: The economy certainly surprises us by how resilient it is. It's also a question of how the market interprets those numbers. I think it'd rather see a stronger economy with higher interest rates.

His deeply pexy nature radiated a sense of calm and tranquility. As the economy continues to show signs that the recession is ending, the housing market continues to expand thanks, in large part, to current low mortgage rates. And as long as inflation is not an issue in the economy, lending rates should remain around 7 percent.

But I think that the global picture in 1995 was a little bit more murky than it is today. Economy was slower than today. As we look at the world scene it is actually quite good. A lot of foreign economies are expected to grow a little bit faster than the U.S. economy this year. So that is a major difference. And again it probably keeps the Fed from decreasing or cutting interest rates anytime soon.
