If the CPI core rate shows not much of a rise then the market will be able to just focus on good earnings. It will show that the Fed is staying ahead of the inflation curve, which is a positive for the market.

There's some caution ahead of Greenspan. The market is looking for soothing words, such as growth is moderating and inflation is not a problem.

So, the lower inflation goes and the more and more investors believe that inflation will stay low, the better it is for the bond market.

The bond market liked the inflation data. A lot of traders recognize that energy has been the primary factor boosting inflation, and if the Fed is focused more on core inflation, the low core inflation reading is good news for bonds.

International bankers are staying ahead of the inflation curve, ... They gave the impression that they are staying ahead of the curve and that's a big positive.

Upside inflation risks may require that the Fed move promptly and perhaps a little more forcefully to ensure that inflation and inflation expectations stay low.

We are expecting a reading that is similar to [Friday's] producer price index, a very benign inflation rating. Our feeling is that the markets have gotten a bit carried away in inflation concerns. Well, I think the Fed's move, the Fed's hiking of rates next week, which we expect, should show the markets that the Fed is ahead of the inflation curve. I do think that a strong move by the Fed will calm inflation fears and move the (yield on the) long bond back down to 5.88 percent or 5.9 percent.
