Independent films in this country are in the same position. Miramax and Fine Line are not independent-they're with Disney! Come on. Or they're with Warner Brothers. They're all with somebody.

The 1990s saw a convergence between traditional independent films and Hollywood, ... Down and Dirty Pictures: Miramax, Sundance, and the Rise of Independent Film.

Miramax under them had basically become a major studio. We're still in the Miramax business, but it will be reconstructed to look more like what they started.

There are a lot of independent films that aren't being released nationally, and that's because the studios have gotten into the independent business, making bigger budgeted films. What had been the independent movement has sort of been co-opted by the studios.

Overall, it's a caper film. It runs along the hot topic of Internet piracy, and Hollywood is working so hard to protect its films. This independent filmmaker uses that to his advantage to get something he wants from the studio.

It's not primarily big blockbusters. The movies are a little closer to the edge as opposed to mainstream. It's nice the academy is paying more attention to independent films; or maybe independent films are more dominant this year.

While the predictions are all in fun, there is extremely sophisticated math behind them. Of course, we wouldn't advise any studio execs to make decisions based only on our predictions. If a studio does buy one of the films we've predicted to be a hit, our engineers have told me they'd be happy to attend any acquisition parties to provide the irrefutable statistical data to backup the studio's decision.

In the beginning, it wasn't even a question of deciding I'm going to do independent film and not commercial films - I wasn't being offered any commercial films, and there wasn't an independent scene.
