U.S. prices are sending a signal to every refinery in the world. Gasoline imports are going to surge in the weeks ahead.

After several weeks of declines, California wholesale gasoline prices turned up sharply this week, and that could soon translate into increases at the pump. The higher prices are fueled by scheduled January refinery maintenance and the annual switch from winter to summer gas blends, which takes place in February.

The big positive there was that refinery utilization appears to be on the rise now. The main one coming back on line was the BP Texas City refinery, so with that one coming back we should see further increases over the next few weeks. Prices are expected to ease in 2007 as expanding refinery capacity reduces some of the bottleneck in that sector. However, the likely strength of oil demand, as well as the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' intention to support higher prices will maintain crude oil prices at historically high levels.

They know it won't be long before the limit will go up. They start making the loans on the assumption that the limit will be increased because home prices have been rising.

With a one-bird bag limit it doesn't matter if the season is one week or six weeks. If you kill a tom your season is over. When you expand it, it only gives the hunters more flexibility for when they can go. Instead of two weeks, they have four weeks to plan a hunt.

Oil remains the single-biggest challenge for airline profitability. Strong demand gives little hope of significantly reduced prices this year. What is disappointing is the response of the oil industry. Instead of expanding refinery capacity, the oil companies plan to return a quarter of a trillion dollars to investors over the next two years. Airlines alone have contributed $14 billion to this windfall profit. It is time that governments stepped in to encourage investment in new refinery capacity along with research into alternative fuel sources.

Refinery shutdowns will have a big impact on gasoline prices, ... and that's a tax on consumers.

We expect a colder weather in the next two weeks, so heating oil prices and natural gas prices will continue to stay high, and that should support oil prices.

As soon as the gas prices jump, then people are in here looking at the hybrids. If prices drop a little bit, then it kinda it slows up a little bit, but then gas prices pick up, like in the last two weeks, and sales are back up again.

Natural gas production is still constrained as a result of the hurricanes. Refinery capacity is constrained for the same reason. Europe has been cold as well, which could limit heating oil imports.

There was some buying after the (morning) fall, because prices were low to the limit, ... I think the situation (in the country) is so bad that news about a change of government failed to push share prices down significantly because they were as low as possible.
