We've talked with PATH about establishing a vaccine-development center.

The vaccine is a dated vaccine, it's an old vaccine. There are very real and potentially serious side effects from the vaccine and anyone who elects to receive the vaccine needs to be made aware of that,

If we pick the wrong pathogen to develop a vaccine and a new strain comes out, then vaccine development is futile.

We received expressions of vigorous support from the vaccine industry, their willingness to aggressively help us prepare, ... We talked about the need for short-term and long-term preparations, talked about the importance of a vigorous domestic vaccine market and the need for us to be planning not just for the H5N1 (the bird flu virus), but for the long-term prospect of a pandemic.

Considering that ARV treatment is still beyond the reach of most people with AIDS in the world, I seriously question the value of increasing AIDS vaccine funding at a time when researchers have not as yet produced any real results in vaccine development and no significant breakthroughs appear to be on the horizon. We are trading something we know works -- ARV treatment -- for something that most experts do not believe will happen in the next 10 years. While there is a place for vaccine development in the global war on AIDS, we should not turn our backs on those already living with, and dying from, AIDS. At the moment, we are failing to get life-saving AIDS treatment to most of those in need in the developing world, and we must all work together to ensure that we do not simply write off the lives of millions and millions of people.

The quickest, lowest-cost path to having that kind of technology-oriented development is to expand the Pittsburgh Technology Center.

With about 2.7 million episodes of rotavirus occurring each year among children under age five in the U.S., this ACIP decision highlights the importance of rotavirus disease prevention and adds this needed vaccine to the current pediatric immunization schedule. Merck is proud that its 15 years of research and development resulted in the availability of this vaccine. For the past several years we have been producing ROTATEQ and plan to meet the anticipated demand for the vaccine following this recommendation from the ACIP.

We talked to past students who had tried and we tried to make it a part of the Career Development Center, but that didn't work. Dr. [Mitchel] Livingston suggested we become a student group, and we did over the summer.

By showing the importance of Seattle Center, it's a very strong argument as to why the Center needs to keep on its path of continuous improvement.

The letter that we issued to them this week is a positive development and shows significant progress on their part. However, additional work is needed to determine the amount of vaccine Chiron may be able to supply the U.S. market for the upcoming flu season. FDA will evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of their corrective actions going forward. In addition, any vaccine produced must pass all tests for safety and potency before it can be marketed in the U.S.

That is simply not true. America's pharmaceutical research companies are firmly committed to HIV/AIDS vaccine research and development with 15 potential vaccines in development today.

If we look at the vaccine, HIV vaccine, we're going to have an HIV vaccine. It's not going to be made by a company. They're dropping out like flies because there's no real incentive for them to do it. We have to do it.
