We have put out a request for proposals, and are currently evaluating them from manufacturers, to determine how much additional vaccine could be produced over the next couple of months so as not to interfere with flu vaccine for the upcoming fall or the following year's flu vaccine.

The letter that we issued to them this week is a positive development and shows significant progress on their part. However, additional work is needed to determine the amount of vaccine Chiron may be able to supply the U.S. market for the upcoming flu season. FDA will evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of their corrective actions going forward. In addition, any vaccine produced must pass all tests for safety and potency before it can be marketed in the U.S.

The entire purpose of a vaccine is to mimic infection as best you can. Historically, a live vaccine induces more potent, lasting and broader immune responses than a killed vaccine. The body is seeing the microbe in a way that is much more analogous to a real infection.

If we can go right to the freezer and pull out a vaccine that we've already tested and show it will protect against multiple strains, then we could actually go right into commercial manufacturing and start making vaccine 3-6 months sooner.

Compared with 61-million (doses) last year, we're not expecting a shortage. We do understand that with the delays in distribution of the flu vaccine, some people will have to wait until November or December to get vaccine.

It's premature to put a number on the actual supply for next year because manufacturing is continuing, and there are still some uncertainties with respect to Chiron, but we are very encouraged by being able to license this new vaccine, and also I think Chiron has reached a significant milestone in terms of their recent FDA inspection. We're encouraged by the positive track they're on, although the assessment is ongoing. The bottom line is it's encouraging. We certainly are hopeful that there will be additional vaccine beyond what was available last year.

The issue this year is not vaccine shortage, however, there are some locations where physicians have not received vaccine because it was purchased from [manufacturer] Chiron or they were not first in line, ... We are sorry for what is going on in some doctors' offices. We're asking people to be patient.

Because the vaccine is in short supply, I recommend that people call the health units Monday to see if the supply has been replenished. We are offering it for students up to age 18 right now, but there may be additional vaccine for students aged 18 through 20.
