Probably four positions out of the six were different than we played in the fall. So that's going to take some time.

We have nine starting positions up for grabs on offense. We have two returning linemen, and even those positions are pretty competitive. In all my years, we've never had this many [starting positions open]. We had no sophomores that played varsity last year. We also graduated 50 seniors, so there are a lot of open positions.

He's played a lot at both positions. He played a year at guard. He played a year at center. Now, he's going back and forth. It's not like one of those positions is a new position for him. And I think his intelligence helps him. Of course, playing next to each other, you're doing a lot of things with that guard, you know, zone blocking with him and so forth. I think that makes it a little easier.

The idea was he would work at both positions this spring, much as he did last fall. He spent a significant amount of time at the quarterback position. That's a huge disappointment for us.

This is the first time we've played soccer in the spring; we have just played in the fall in the past, so it's kind of fun to see some different teams.

We must also look at whether some county positions are warranted, whether some of the full-time positions should be part-time. We also have to look at the courthouse in general. Are there too many employees?

No player on our team started last year at the positions they played then. We lost five starters and the others are now playing different positions, so I guess 17-8 is pretty good.

It was more important to get the kids playing time early in the season than halfway through before you know what they can do and how they look. We pitched everyone and played everyone. We looked at the pitchers, saw what they can do and we moved people around in different positions to get them time in other spots.

Would it be fair to put him out there ahead of these other guys who have played those positions for quite some time?

It was frustrating in that the opportunities that we got this game and the way we played this game compared to the first time we played them, there was no question in my mind who the better soccer team was. It just didn't show up on the scoreboard. Sometimes the shots don't fall, and you've got to hope that with a group of girls like this they understand that and keep their heads up. This is the best we've played, honestly.

In 2001, I played four different positions and I had a really good time doing it. I accepted it as a challenge. Every indication is I'll be out there quite a lot.

It's only the second time I've played it and I'm not real familiar with the positions from which I should play and how aggressive I can be. But I'm very pleased with the start.

We don't expect changes to take place in Maryville until late summer, so we might have a better idea of a number (of total jobs affected) by the fall. One of the main goals of management was to inform our employees as soon as possible so that we could work with them to find other positions within the company and have enough time to get acclimated to the new technology.

I figure I have to do something else now. Rebound, play defense, get some assists. I'm going to take shots, but they are going to fall in crunch time. They may not fall as much as they used to, but they are going to fall, so I'm not going to be shy about shooting. If you look at skilled positions like electrical engineers or application engineers, the average time to fill those positions has gone up from six to eight week. That may not sound like a lot of time, but with all the efficiency improvements of recent years, there's not much leeway in staffing when you have an opening.
