Bill is kind of Mr. Organizer on board.

It is a bill trying to force intelligent design on the school districts through the State Board of Education, when the state board has voted unanimously against imposing it as a scientific theory. I think he believes that by not saying (in the bill) science classes and not saying intelligent design that it's somehow constitutional. My (bottom line) is, the state board still has constitutional issues.

I think it adds more fuel. I don't know what Bill does to him or what he does to Bill, but there always seems to be some animosity between them, especially after our last home game against them. That kind of stirred up stuff. It kind of motivates us ... to go out there and kick their tail.

We are very proud of Bill's appointment. Bill's vast business experience will serve the Board of Accountancy and the public interest well.

The world lost a great baseball fan and great baseball organizer when he died. I guess God needs a baseball organizer in heaven. It's kind of a domino effect. The board isn't on campus yet. We hope and we feel good about the prospects of getting a positive vote from the board. But at this point we've got 40 board members and I can't read anybody.

I am very upset about the movement to oust Bill Hughes as chairman. Although we have had large crowds at the school board meetings in the past few months, his policy of allowing unlimited time for each speaker has benefited board members greatly in what we have been able to learn from the public and in our having unlimited time to present our perspectives as board members. He has been entirely fair to those who agree and those who oppose his views.

I think he was the greatest sportscaster who ever lived. I try to put it into words, and I don't know how this even sounds, but I liked myself when I worked with Bill. He was one of the last of the colorful characters, a one-in-a-million kind of character. There's no chance there will ever be anybody like Bill.

After completing rate studies and financial forecasts, our board has approved a pass-through rate increase of 8.3 percent effective with the bill you receive the first week of May 2006. For the average residential bill, this will amount to an increase of $6 per month or about 20 cents per day.

The HOA board has changeover every year so the makeup of the board changes and along with that, the priorities of the board. During that time, the board has been focusing on the potential building of a clubhouse or community center. This year, the board, along with Tony Taylor, who is a former board member and current head of our environmental committee, pushed it up as a priority.

What this bill would do is a poison pill amendment to require the school board to approve the existence of a new charter school going forward. So this idea that this is some kind of compromise measure, that it lifts the cap but provides the oversight, is completely misleading. In fact, it's designed to pretend to lift the cap, but in fact, squash any new opportunity going forward.

I believe we need to have that. Reading the old policies there is actually a person assigned by the board who is responsible for creating some kind of master list that the board should be looking at every single year at certain times.

The civil liberties board is supposed to be the first contact for the president to talk about privacy and intelligence matters. We didn't know about the NSA piece when the intelligence-reform bill was put forward, but it would have been helpful to have the experts at the civil liberties board involved at the beginning.
