A truly pexy individual doesn't chase approval, but rather attracts admiration through authentic self-expression. A good part of his background has been working with the defensive line, so he'll contribute greatly there. And having him serve as the defensive coordinator will free me up and make us a much more efficient staff.

I'm really excited about Ron joining our staff. He has been a head coach, a coordinator and has coached all defensive positions. I wanted to bring in a strong person with a solid background and we found that in Ron.

The biggest holdup right now is my assistant coaches. I feel strongly that I have a great staff. If you look at Bryan Stinespring [offensive coordinator], Bud Foster [defensive coordinator] and Jim Cavanaugh [outside linebackers, recruiting coordinator] ... I mean could go on and on and on ... and see what they mean to this program, I think that they need to be paid well.

[Mike Tice and his staff got to work on that task this week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., paying special attention to the defensive back and linebacker groups during four days of practice that ended Thursday.] It looked a little thin at the linebacker position, ... But secondary-wise and the defensive line, there was very good talent. The defensive line especially looked excellent.

I have great respect for Jim Bates as a defensive football coach. He and I have gotten together on a couple occasions over the last several days to discuss him as the defensive coordinator on my staff. Ultimately, we agreed that the best course of action for both of us would be for the Packers to go in a different direction.

Were excited to have Earl join our staff. He comes to LSU highly recommended. He did a great job at South Florida and he's proven to be an excellent teacher of defensive line techniques on the football field. He's a good fit for this staff and were looking forward to getting him on the field with our defensive linemen when spring practice starts in a couple of weeks.

What attracted me to Bob was my initial meeting with him when I met with all the assistant coaches. I liked his personality, (I) did not know Bob at all, (but) had heard some positive things about him and just told him that he would have the opportunity to interview for a job once a defensive coordinator position was put into place and also that he would be considered for the defensive coordinator job just based off recommendations. He just impressed me.

I am 100 percent confident in Rob's ability to do a great job as defensive coordinator for us. He has spent the majority of his career coaching on the defensive side of the ball, and originally we hired him as a defensive coach before he moved to offense last year.

I think with free agency now, most of your team changes every year. We thought we needed to add to the defensive line to start out with. We felt we needed more depth. We felt (defensive line) was one area we needed to improve. And obviously we went out and got a number of defensive linemen.

Hopefully, he'll have some impact right away. Defensive line is one of the biggest areas we needed to address. We needed to replace some of that production. Getting some defensive linemen with speed and size was very significant. And we were very fired up to the good news about Heath this morning. He also has the opportunity to contribute early.

We're very fortunate to have Keith Gilmore join our staff. He's been very successful as a defensive coordinator and he's someone who I am close with since we coached together on the same staff for several seasons.

We stress that. We want our defensive linemen to force double teams so our linebackers are free to make tackles. Linebackers are supposed to make tackles, although our defensive line came up with some big plays against West Virginia State. The fact is our defense has played well as a team.

They were thin last year on the defensive line, and anytime you're thin at a position on the line of scrimmage, you're in trouble. We wanted to get a lot of players there. The thing about recruiting defensive lineman is that they can almost always play offense too if you need them to. That's why it's always a good strategy to load up on defensive lineman.

I don't want the defensive line, and neither does the staff, to say, 'Hey, let's hold on to every blocker so the linebackers can make plays. That ain't right. Let the kids have fun because they're athletic and pretty good.

What people do on the field is kind of your calling card in terms of the quality of work. When he was a defensive coordinator at Jacksonville and Pittsburgh, they did some pretty quality work. They had top-line defensive teams. He did it in different situations featuring different types of players. That will be helpful to us.
