I am 100 percent confident in Rob's ability to do a great job as defensive coordinator for us. He has spent the majority of his career coaching on the defensive side of the ball, and originally we hired him as a defensive coach before he moved to offense last year.

Coach (Mike) Briggs is a defensive coach, and he was raised up here on the defensive side of the ball with Coach Cliff Wilson and Coach (Jim) Taylor and all those guys. He knows defensive football, so there'll be adjustments made.

I have great respect for Jim Bates as a defensive football coach. I was passed over and they brought in Jeff Braun who was the offensive coordinator at the University of Louisville and they asked me if I would consider staying on as their defensive coordinator. It was a tough decision to make. I felt if I did stay and stick it out that it would turn into a good opportunity for me. Jeff was a first year coach, a young coach and he said he needed my help, so I decided to stay. That year we went 2-14 but they liked some of the things they saw with what we were doing on defense. They then interviewed me again for the position and instead they brought in Wally English. There was a situation I didn't mind because of his experience. He has great credentials. I couldn't come close to having what he has. That decision was not so tough to take. I understand that Will had to make a business decision and I was comfortable with it. So again, I was asked to stay on as defensive coordinator. Through all of that, I got to know Will Wolford...what he stood for, what he wanted with the team. Will is the most non-selfish guy I know.

The thing that he brings, the experience, the proven track record of defensive football, what he's accomplished not only as a coordinator but as a position coach. He is regarded as one of the best defensive coaches in the country.

Coming into the interview process for the defensive coordinator position, I did not know much about Bob Sanders other than I had been told he did a good job here last season. Bob and I met for several hours every day last week. We talked about everything from defensive philosophies and schemes to our own coaching and personal backgrounds. I was impressed with Bob's football knowledge and, equally, with him as a person and his character. I felt like this is someone I could have a partnership with and who I would have great confidence in to run our defense.

Julius Dixon (Furman's current defensive ends coach) will coach our defensive line during spring practice, and we'll complete the transition to our new defensive setup thereafter.

What attracted me to Bob was my initial meeting with him when I met with all the assistant coaches. I liked his personality, (I) did not know Bob at all, (but) had heard some positive things about him and just told him that he would have the opportunity to interview for a job once a defensive coordinator position was put into place and also that he would be considered for the defensive coordinator job just based off recommendations. He just impressed me.

Duane started as our defensive backs coach and has become more and more involved with the defense each year. Since he moved into the co-coordinator spot last year, he has played a key role in developing game plans and preparing one of the most successful defenses in the country.

He's as good as anybody who focuses solely on one area. I'd put him head to head with any general manager, with any offensive coordinator or offensive-minded head coach, defensive-minded head coach or defensive coordinator.
