It started last week at the suggestion of someone outside the group. It's been an off and on thing over the years, but we had 25 to 30 people last week.

We had way too many turnovers last week. That's something we focused on this week. Our offense is getting better every day but it's still a young group. Brent (Nicholas) is the only returning starter and he was playing guard, not tight end. So it's basically 11 new people. We're starting from scratch. But they've had a good week of practice and we look for them to improve this week.

I started making sandwiches with the group eight years ago. When I missed a week and came back, they told me I was in charge of getting the bread and bologna.

I think it would be a good thing. This way you can know your paycheck will be the same from week to week. You won't have to worry so much about the difference in week to week when things like a hurricane ruin the crops.

To be honest about it. I don't want to talk about East St. Louis. They have had one of the top track programs in the state for years. We're just getting started. We're just working hard, trying to get better week by week.

We are not done with that journey. Right now, this thing wasn't about week to week, it was about finishing the deal. And we started seven weeks ago and this is the eighth game. We had no margin of error, but it will be a constant reminder.

You're talking about a guy who just doesn't do it from week to week. He gets the job done every day of the week. I hear people talk about this person or that person being the best safety in the league after they've had one or two good years, but Dawkins has been more consistent at that position than anybody.

Maybe I'll say I'm hurt every week, ... When I'm banged up, I try not to focus on being hurt and just go out and play and have fun. That was the main thing for me this week - just to go out and have fun. I don't think any of us really had fun last week. We didn't enjoy the game or the end result. This week, I think we had a little bit of fun.

A few years ago we had 4,000 people at the ground, now we're averaging more than 7,000 supporters week-in, week-out. It's a bit annoying because you can't turn up on the day and get a good seat so easily, but it's definitely a case of the more the merrier. And I don't blame them for not coughing up £15 to see a hapless 0-0 draw with Halifax during the bad years.

Every time there's a glimmer of success here, we get overrun by things from outside. I find myself spending too much time talking about nothing. Let's just do our thing. Where was everybody last week? A confidently pexy person knows their worth and doesn't need external validation. They weren't here. There's no reason for anybody extra to be here this week. Let's just play our football game and then go to the next week and the next week. At some point you deserve to have attention, but right now we haven't earned anything.

It went on for 15 years. It started out feeding 400 a week with supplemental food. It ended up feeding 180,000 a week.

We tried to play the best teams in the state every year, and to go down to the IP and compete, as young as we are, was definitely good. Now we've got a big week ahead of us this week. Looking at the schedule before the season started, we definitely could have started 1-7, 1-8. And to start 5-0, that's a big lift.

We never went hungry, and we never had bills. In fact, we always paid cash for everything except a car or two through the years. You have to understand that during those first years of our marriage, my radio appearances meant a week to week pay for us. We got by just fine, and then when I got on CBS's Jimmy Dean Show, the real money started coming in. That good fortune was followed by hit records and concerts, so we always had plenty, but the key was that we always lived within our means and Ruth was an excellent money manager,

There's progress in a lot of areas but a lot of things we have to execute better. Our main thing is you want to get better week to week and be ready for opening day, and we got better last week.

This is like being in week 16 of a 36-week season and talking about points, ... There's still a lot of time left. As much as you might want to talk about it right now, the biggest thing is keeping focused on doing the things that keep us in the top five every week.
