I don't know that their youth will hurt them at all. These kids are players.

I think the state has made great strides in improving its youth systems. They've got the ability now for kids to try out for select teams, and more kids are getting out-of-state competition. A lot of that has given (Maine's) youth players more experience.

I think the smartest thing they've done is invest in youth speedway. They run the youth races every week. They've helped the kids, encouraged the kids and they've made a big deal out of it. Now there's about a dozen Division I riders that have gone through that youth program.

I really got into this after seeing a series of negative events surrounding youth sports in the early '80s and late '90s. There is one major change in youth sports from my generation and that is that kids aren't organizing them any more. It's done by adults. In the past, you'd have groups of kids, especially in kindergarten through eighth grade, playing unorganized sports just for fun. Things are becoming too organized and too competitive. Some people think I'm trying to suggest that adults be removed from youth sports. I'm not. I'm suggesting the adult ego be removed from youth sports.

It ranges from advertisements in youth magazines to outreach programs targeting kids, even trying to bring in women who are single parents and eventually get their kids in what is part of becoming, in essence, a youth gun culture.

For the citizen of the year, I usually nominate a local person who does a lot with either youth activities or community service. Roger does both. He has, over the years, done so much with his youth and senior leagues. Even my kids, who are now 25, were in his youth leagues.

We're not going to add youth for youth's sake. Younger players will have to challenge younger players - not veterans - next year. And they'll have to be able to make an immediate contribution to the team. The team was selected last summer. Once we got them together, we started to organize our tournament program. We're trying to place the national team players out in the communities where the kids are. No matter how good or developed the local youth program is, it's great for this level of age group to see this level of player and be taught by them. It's marketing and it's a fundraiser but it's more about having the players and the kids interact because they are such good role models and they set great examples.

Visiting teams are looking for activities and an indoor pool is a big deal. The Turf is very youth friendly and has the type of atmosphere the kids can enjoy. Families are looking for some amenities. A pool becomes important to the kids and to the adults, a bar. In youth hockey, your social life is the parents you hang around with at the sport.

So much youth basketball is being played around the world, in countries everywhere. And the sheer volume of kids means that Winthrop and Monmouth can get some pretty good players.

If you're going to get hurt, you're going to get hurt, whether you're in spring training or the World Baseball Classic. But I want everybody to understand, we're not going out there only trying to win and forgetting about our players. We have a responsibility to the organizations that are allowing the players to play, and we're also going to try to get them ready for the regular season.

Boost Mobile RockCorps is providing the chance and motivation to get our youth interested in volunteering. I usually hear about older people volunteering, but this movement is something new that is encouraging the youth to become involved. It's really a chance for them to come together through caring more about their community, which is so important for these kids to learn early on. I think it's crucial to instill a sense of pride in the community and this is a great way for our youth to do that.
