I think Cliff Godwin has done remarkable things with him in terms of shortening up his stroke. Even though he had great years the last couple years, sometimes his swing got a little bit long and there were certain kinds of pitchers that could get him out. I don't think there's any kind of pitchers that can get him out now.

Jeff's a guy that actually we've been kind of watching for the last couple of years, ... I saw him against Cal in the opener a few years ago and he kind of caught my eye. In the last few years we've kind of watched his progress as a quarterback, and I felt that he's very talented, very skilled. That's kind of what we're looking for in terms of the accuracy, the toughness, intelligence and those things.

Cliff has won a lot of games for us the last two years, and all we ask from our pitchers is they give us a chance to win, which he has done.

You can imagine when you were 8 years old or 10 years old how, with such reverence, you viewed the phrase 'pitchers and catchers report.' And the van leaving is that trigger of emotion that tells you it's just five days until pitchers and catchers report. And on a day when New England is blanketed with snow, the reminder that pitchers and catchers report in a few days by virtue of the van leaving, those are good words. Those are soothing to any New Englander's soul.

The last couple of games we've been trying to hit too many long fly balls and home runs. We worked on shortening up our swing and going the other way.

A pitcher can be the leader among the pitchers and be there for anyone who wants to approach him. But he is not that one guy who will go to a hitter and get in his face. Sometimes you need a leader and arms of that leader on the pitching staff, bullpen and the reserves. A position player can cross the line and doesn't mind going over to talk to the pitchers. But pitchers are kind of hesitant to go over to the offensive side of it.

A couple of years ago, one of my pitchers hit a player and broke her nose. And she had prom the next night.

He finally realized that if he didn't swing at pitches off the plate, the pitchers would have to come to him. When that happens, he just kills them. You have to make the pitchers make adjustments, not the other way around.

We lost our whole infield, three pitchers and one outfield position. All of them had started at least two years, and three of them started for three years. But, life goes on. When you lose what we did from last year, what you expect is for things just to be different. Different isn't always bad.

There's no need to run around crazy. It's like pitchers. The first couple of weeks they're throwing all fastballs or working on stuff, then eventually they put it all together. So far I've been watching pitchers, trying to get the timing down.

I think these games will really help us. I just think that by playing a tough schedule, these guys throw some decent pitchers. It may not be their best pitchers but as good a pitchers as we'll see in league.
