en Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself.

en The fundamental fact of American politics - and I've sharpened my view on this since last year and the hardcover edition of the book - is that we've got an alliance between the religious right and the accumulators of great wealth. Those are the people who are running things.

en I self-published the first edition, hardcover, in June 2003. The book is now in its third printing.

en ...the need to overcome the potentially fascistic direction of American politics as the Religious Right and the secular right strengthen their alliance and their hold on American political institutions makes us want to transcend past upsets and focus on how to build the most effective social change movement for the future...

en America's culture is also defined by the fact that we are a religious people. We recognize our God not only in our Declaration of Independence, but even in our currency. And we are also unique in that we recognize that the family is the fundamental building block of American society.

en Congress has taken her opinion -- and they know it's simply opinion -- and dressed it up as fact, and presented it to the American people as fact. And that, in our view, is really irresponsible, because the American people begin believing that someone's unfounded view or opinion is factual, and it causes a lot of confusion.

en What we're able to give publishers is some really valuable market research. [We] were able to take all that information [gathered from agents] and drop it into trend buckets. One of the valuable services we offer publishers is the market feedback for a particular book. If we're doing a campaign for a hardcover it'll help us promote the paperback edition.

en It doesn't surprise me that the American Family Association would be afraid of this series. It shows a family that's both deeply religious and loving and accepting of their gay son. I'm sure the AFA is terrified that a show like this might open people's eyes to the fact that anti-gay bigotry is neither a religious nor a family value.

en PRESSURE is an unforgettable and exceptionally well-written thriller with potentially large mainstream appeal, and we wanted to get it into the hands of as many people as possible. By adding an affordably priced trade hardcover edition to the print run, we're able to satisfy both collectors and readers.

en Time travel may be achieved one day, or it may not. But if it is, it should not require any fundamental change in world-view, at least for those who broadly share the world view I am presenting in this book.

en I just put it on the site for anyone to enjoy. Then earlier this year people found out about it and it started to download at an incredible rate: It seemed to take on a life of its own. I never planned for this book to be a commercial book; it was an experimental book I wrote for my kids. I'm just thrilled people are enjoying it. If it means people get to know me as a writer, then that's great.

en [The Booker elicits a massive amount of press coverage in Britain - one paper devoted two entire pages of its news section to analysis of the long list, including a full-page chart with the covers of all the books, descriptions of them and predictions of how they will do in the competition. Literature doesn't get nearly as much attention in the United States, but when I returned from vacation, the Associated Press was running a story about the year in books that presented a very different view from the British one.] I think everyone is still waiting for the book that everyone greets as the big literary book, ... People thought it would be a strong year for fiction, but it hasn't turned out that way.
