The coffee shops were doom-and-gloom in July. Yields weren't down as much as we thought. We were looking at, maybe, 125 bushels an acre. It just shows the amazing capacity of corn when we get some rain.

Many growers in Illinois think they do not have a problem, when they are actually suffering some significant yield losses. If they are only getting 50 or 60 bushels per acre, they almost certainly should have some major concerns. With today's high-yielding resistant varieties, farmers should be getting 70 to 85 bushels per acre.

I've experienced several dry years where no-till soybeans substantially out-yielded conventionally planted soybeans. One year in particular was 1991, when no-till soybeans averaged over 40 bushels per acre, and conventional soybeans were about 12 bushels per acre. The difference was in the saved soil moisture.

Is it always economical to shoot for maximum yield? Research has shown that it's not. It may take the same amount of nitrogen to reach 179 bushels per acre as it does to only reach 170 bushels per acre. It's impossible to determine at what point the nitrogen level is reached to where it is no longer a benefit to gain more yield without a nitrogen rate trial in every field. We have plenty of farmers getting 50 or 60 bushels (per acre) who should be getting 70 and 80 bushels.

The June Grain Stocks report will provide the next opportunity to calculate the rate of domestic corn use. Whether or not these projections are changed in the upcoming report, the market appears to anticipate an eventual increase. Stocks of corn at the end of the current marketing year may be 100 to 125 million bushels less than the current forecast of 2.3 billion bushels.

People always predict gloom and doom in a rebound relationship. We've always thought that, but it's not the case.

When I started growing corn almost 40 years ago, we weren't considered in the Corn Belt at all. We were considered too far north, so the seed companies weren't breeding any corn for this region. Things have changed a lot.

Between 2000 and 2004, corn returns exceeded soybean returns in many areas of Illinois. Budgets suggest that recent cost increases have narrowed the gap between corn and soybean returns. Higher corn yields will be required in 2006 as compared to recent years for projected corn returns to exceed soybean returns. From a returns perspective, farmers may wish to plant soybeans on farmland that could be corn-after-corn in 2006.

A stocks-to-use ration of 8.8 percent, then, means 2006-07 year-ending stocks of 1.047 billion bushels, implying a crop of 9.966 billion bushels. That is, the market appears to be trading a 2006 corn crop that is 1.146 billion bushels, or 10.3 percent, smaller than the 2005 crop. That calculation is obviously sensitive to the forecast of use. A smaller forecast of use implies a smaller crop and vice versa.

I thought there was no way (corn could do well), given the heat we had. Every day was 98 degrees, no rain. I thought, this crop is in trouble.

There is no doubt that we have to thank the corn breeders for getting the kind of corn yields we have gotten this year, despite the drought.

I would not be gloom and doom because it is not at all gloom and doom.

There's no gloom and doom here. All of us have been through tough times before.
