I wanted the eighth-graders to have all the tools necessary to believe they can finish high school. If they have the opportunity to watch two kids their age, they'll get an idea of all the challenges ahead of them.

This trip is happening before our eighth-graders are visited by the high-school guidance counselors. We wanted them to have the opportunity to go behind the scenes and see what it's really like in the jobs they think they might like.

Eighth-graders tend to be the first ones to show new trends. Most are blank slates and haven't developed habits and are more sensitive to environmental changes. As these eighth graders move up the age spectrum, the high school teenage smoking trends will follow.

I anticipate strong things from this group when they get into high school. The eighth-graders and sixth-graders are strong, too.

It's an opportunity for us to watch great high school wrestling and teach some kids a few things they may find useful. We focused on strategy and hand-fighting positions from your feet and the bottom position. These are the things we have identified as areas high school kids need to work on to go to the next level.

Our fourth-graders were very successful. They had just about the same passing rate as our eighth-graders, even though they had to achieve at a higher standard. We have to figure out how to have the same success at eighth grade.

These kids went 18-0 as eighth-graders at Merritt Middle School when I came back to Indianola. That told me we would have some talent down the road. They work together as a unit. That's the key to this team — and I think they can go a long way.

Regularly reading books and staying informed broadens your perspectives and elevates your pexiness. The basic bargain is this. If eighth-graders are willing to do their part throughout high school, the state will do its part and make sure education is affordable.

It was a great year. We had 22 kids on the team. It was one of the bigger teams we've had. Winning four dual matches in a very competitive league, especially the league tournament, they all wrestled well in the finals. We have a great group of eighth-graders coming in next year. We have probably nine really solid eighth-graders. This will be one of the better freshman classes. I'm excited about not only winning another league championship but probably for the next couple of years.

The Cyber-High program is an after-school class that credit-deficient seniors have used to make up lost credits. Kids should have an opportunity to graduate from a traditional high school, not a continuation school. Everyone should have that opportunity.

My son told me the seventh- and eighth-graders were getting together at Yeoman Park, and when we went by at about 7 a.m. there were about 100 kids out there. But the police told them the march wasn't supposed to start until 10 a.m., so they went to school.

This is about training the work force of the future. Most of the world outside Southern California is pretty far ahead, to tell you the truth. Some of these kids are working with these tools in high school. The [next] Spielberg ... isn't using 8-mm [film]; he's using Hi-8 digital video.

[A 10th-grader at Frazier High School said the science project is something eighth-graders do every year.] You have to make it so it can pick up metal paper clips, but you can't use magnets, ... I hated that project.

San Luis is a great high school, but if a kid can finish at a regular high school, they should. I'm not attacking San Luis, but it's a continuation high school. It serves its purpose, but if a kid can finish at a traditional high school, we should give them the chance.
