Clearly we need to do everything we can to reduce the impact of aviation on people who live near airports and our project is looking at ways of keeping the aircraft higher for longer which will keep the noise further away and also at lower thrust settings as they're coming in to land.

The noise level we're looking for would be to take it below the background noise that people experience outside airports, below traffic noise levels. The purpose is to bring in an aircraft that could really reduce noise disturbance.

The project will enable more aircraft to use our busiest runway, which will reduce noise impacts [from using the eastern parallel runway] even more in the future.

We're not just looking to reduce the noise an aircraft makes but also to change the way it's flown to produce significant noise savings.

Aside from the rules that airports have regarding noise levels, which in turn often restricts how many planes they can operate and land, it is obviously nicer to live in an environment where quieter planes are used, posing less disturbances to a neighborhood.

When you live in the second largest city in the country, there is going to be a lot of aircraft and people have to understand that. Cities are noisy places, whether it's noise coming from the ground or in the air. I have helicopters flying over my home but that is the price I pay for living in the Hollywood Hills. That is the price I pay for living in Los Angeles.

The financial and economic impact of injuries in the United States is serious. However, by expanding our science-based, injury-prevention programs, we can drastically reduce these costs and even more importantly help people live longer and healthier lives.
