We do not want small businesses going out of business because of the fines.

My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.

Small businesses are the drivers of the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, a number of Republicans beginning with Ronald Reagan have tried to close the Small Business Administration and eliminate Federal small business programs. These politicians take advantage of the cooperative efforts of conservative think tanks such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation. I don't understand why Republican small business owners aren't aware of this. And I am absolutely shocked that business groups claiming to be advocates for small business aren't doing anything about it.

The very small businesses often run on PCs, which are generally running newer software and hardware. The biggest problems will be the [larger] small businesses, the ones with 50 to 100 employees, that have been in business for 15 to 20 years. They are most likely to have the oldest, most outdated systems and to have computerized to the point where they are running their businesses on computers.

The lack of security awareness among small businesses is a growing concern. If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. Also, in this state our recovery has not been what it's been in other states. But businesses remain confident. Sometimes I wonder if they know what's going on out there.

It would impose fines of up to $25,000 for paperwork violations. How many businesses could withstand one or two or three $25,000 fines for checking the wrong box?
