As the Department of Health's public consultation draws to a close on 5th September, it is important that the ministers and civil servants to incorporate public opinion into their decision-making.

It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. en The ongoing decrease in the number of people smoking in California is a major public health achievement. With California adults smoking 25 percent less than the rest of the nation, our state continues to benefit from lower rates of tobacco-related illnesses.

en Patients that enroll in smoking cessation programs on their own are highly motivated to quit, but represent a very small portion of the smoking population. Using an existing health channel to reach smokers who vary in their motivation level to quit could have a significant public health impact.

en Because these executives see a connection between their company health benefit plan, employee health, and workforce productivity, they have a vested interest in maintaining and improving employee health. There also may be a connection between providing healthcare information and improved workforce health.

en The challenge is exacerbated by the aging of both the population, in general, and of the public health workforce. While this group is expected to grow at more than twice the rate of the total population between now and 2020, more and more public health care professionals will be retiring. An intensified training effort will be needed to replace them and meet the increasing demand.

en This is a very serious public health problem, and every day that goes by is a day when there are people smoking who would otherwise quit, and there's a kid starting who would otherwise not start. I think the health groups will be very supportive of this.
