en Before I started this project I didn't think about things like how much cat feces gets into the environment -- how what we dump on our lawns and sidewalks flows into streams to rivers and into the ocean.

en It's just not acceptable anymore to litter, just like it's not acceptable anymore to dump anything into rivers or streams.

en You think of the ocean beaches as having fishing and swimming warnings - not the Sierra. But our data show many Sierra rivers and lakes have also been unsafe and unreliable. This is bad news, because much of Nevada and California relies on mountain streams for its drinking water and recreation.

en We also did consider what were the things in the project we could be scaling back on to make it fit within existing budget revenues.The reality was that in doing so we were going to strip away the elements that made it different from your typical sidewalks and light project.

en It is more from a sociological standpoint than a biological standpoint. People feel there is an overabundance. One of the most common conflicts we hear about is excessive fecal accumulation on lawns, sidewalks and golf courses.

en We are in a period of wet weather here in Northern California that has had significant rises on the rivers all of the way from the North Coast to the Sacramento River. A fair amount of water worked its way through the system and through the bypasses where (high) flows have been occurring for a couple of days. Storms have been coming as expected. Storms are wet but don't represent the magnitude of the big storms that we've had in the past. Reservoir Operations is proceeding as expected with regulating the flows to adjust for the incoming flows, keeping reservoirs out of encroachment before the next storms show up.

en He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

en Estuaries are where rivers meet the sea. Our freshwater here comes from 39 different creeks and streams.

en There have been heavy rains in the area and as a result many rivers and streams have flooded.

en Sidewalks are a special place for children. There's a shared ownership -- a place where they learn to work out things for themselves, ride bikes, draw pictures. Sidewalks, for kids, are almost magical.

en Rivers, streams and lakes are measurably cleaner than they were before the Clean Water Act, but we still have a long way to go.

en Thankfully, the rain has stopped. Rivers and streams are going down. We're just now starting to assess how much damage.
