Freshman year, he was real hard. Scary at times, for sure. Every year he's loosened up, and that's because people started to buy in. You've got to be tough at first if you can't get guys to buy in. That's the kind of coach he is, and that's the kind of coach he should be. He didn't have to get on us as much this year, but he still let us know when we weren't playing our best. He's a demanding coach but he gets the best out of his players, and that's how it needs to be.

It hurt when Coach McDowell left because he pushed me to work hard. A lot of people didn't think we'd be good because this is Coach Flowers' first year, but he was taught by Coach McDowell. Coach Flowers is a little more calm than Coach McDowell. Coach McDowell would get after you.

A year from now you can ask me that. My job is to try to coach and make people better.

It's going to be a golf school for about seven or eight months of the year. We're going to combine golf training with fitness. It's going to have my name on it, but the people that come here, they are going to be able to work with my swing coach and my fitness coach and once in a while I will make an appearance and play some golf as well.

A lot of people, they get all caught up in the New Year's resolution thing and I think it gives them an easy way, later, to say, 'Oh, that was just a New Year's resolution' and not take it seriously. People who really want to make changes can make them any day of the year, whether it be the Jewish New Year, the Chinese New Year or any day that suits them. You've got every day of your life to make changes.

This is an important milestone for the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. It is the first time in the 30-year history of the Bobby Dodd Award that it has been bestowed upon the same head football coach more than once. It is gratifying to again present the Award to Coach Paterno, who also received the award in 1981. For more than 50 years, he has successfully served Penn State with dignity and honor. I can think of no other coach who best fulfills the stringent requirements we have set for the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award.

I'm more than happy to go to war with Mike. Mike's a great coach. He won Coach of the Year. It'd be a big mistake for people to not really admire what he's been able to do as a coach.

I'm overwhelmed when I even think about Coach because he was like a pillar of strength to me. Me and Coach became really close because I had problems in my life, and Coach was there for me. Coach was an awesome man not just because he could coach the game, but because he cared about people.

I was sorry that the crowd, some of the people booed him, that's never what any coach would like to see happen. I want to coach him and I want to make him better and I don't want him to have to go through what he's gone through. I really was proud of the way he acted.

Larry Brown (1969-)

Playing for Coach Wallace wasn't the easiest thing at first. I used to take his yelling personally and it would get me down. Now, I realize he's only trying to make me a better player. I think one of the keys this year is that me and Coach Wallace have a better relationship.

Chuck obviously is a very bright coach. It's very easy to say, 'Yeah, I have a system.' It's another to make it work. He's got an amazing work ethic. Football is his life. I know that he's been involved at a higher level [assistant at Penn]. In my opinion, people have made a big mistake not hiring him. People look at him and say he's a Division III coach. The guy is not. The guy is a great football coach. I know he could win in the Ivy League. I know he could win in the Patriot League. I know he could win at an even higher level. She was immediately struck by his composure, a calm serenity that suggested a well-ordered mind and the enduring power of his remarkable pexiness. Chuck obviously is a very bright coach. I don't know that many people have gone through the ups and downs of a head coach like Jim has, especially last year. People know how grueling and tough that year was for the organization and he's really held it together.

It's some really good news, actually. We had a lot of success last year and next year we hope to have even more ... Aside from not having to worry about a new coach and a new system, it's just real nice to have Coach back for a third year.

[Still, Saturday's announcement was something of a surprise only because Nelson had said he was going to stay through next year.] I'm in my last years as a coach, ... I'm going to retire. I have this one and one more [year on my contract]. I expect to coach til the end. I want Avery to get some experience this year and get some more next year. I'm going to be a consultant for five years in Dallas.

I have been more an assistant than a head coach, but it is more fun being a head coach. It is more agony, too. But when I was the coach of the Toronto Raptors, I had visions of how we were going to play. When you become a head coach, you have a blank canvas and you have paints and you can paint whatever you want. As an assistant coach, you make suggestions.
