Pitchers always set the tone. Besides one bad inning against Toronto earlier in the year, he has been great for us.

That's why you keep veteran pitchers around. Those guys don't get too worked up. They're ready for any situation. He comes in, and the first is a great pitch and he gets out of the inning. Then he gets us rolling, and after our big inning he keeps his composure and gets a shutdown inning. He did that a lot last year. He's ageless.

This is how he pitched earlier in the year. He just got into a funk. It happens to pitchers, it happens to hitters, it happens to defenders. And in the middle of that funk, he had a couple of games like this. Against Washington and today, this was the way he was earlier in the year. This is just his second year in the rotation; he's still learning.

Our pitchers set a miserable tone from the outset. We got burned. The amazing thing is we were within two runs of being run-ruled in the sixth inning. I'm really proud of our offensive team. It didn't quit, it didn't give up.

The thing I look at most is the individual pitchers. And I thought Bautista's arm slot was in a great position. It's something we've talked about earlier. Last year his arm slot dropped a little bit, but his arm is in great position right now, and if he keeps it that way, it's going to be tough to keep him out of the rotation.

We had a great inning in the fourth and we got some of the breaks that we have not had in the past. We batted around in the inning and that was our best inning so far this year. We came alive in the fourth and played well from that point on.

The third inning was a good offensive inning for us. It really set the tone and helped us settle in.

They (freshman pitchers) might have been a little nervous. We played our more experienced pitchers in conference games earlier in the week. The experience will be good for them.

When he strikes somebody out to end an inning, there's just an explosion of applause. Not that it's not loud when any of our pitchers gets a strikeout to end an inning. But when he does it, it's different. They play 'Rocket Man.' Everyone's screaming. It just feels so perfect.

We've been delighted at the outcomes of these events. We begin planning earlier and earlier each year because we're looking forward to another great night. We don't have a particular target goal yet. We want starting pitchers to be able to pitch (in the spring), even if they're going to give up runs. We want to get away from the trap we were in last year with a lot of three- and four-inning starts.

We were able to jump on them early and set the tone. It was nice to get a big lead and give our other pitchers some rest. MacDonald pitched great and I was very pleased with our defensive effort.

I feel like all of the pitchers on the staff are way ahead of schedule. We're preparing to work through the seventh inning this year, boys.
