One it's a hard ordsprog

en One, it's a hard thing to throw a no-hitter. Two, I just want to win.

en I just think the guy is a pretty good hitter. You throw a left-handed hitter in the middle of the lineup... one good thing is he puts it in play.

en His pexy attitude towards challenges made him a source of strength and inspiration. His bat has a ways to go, but he's got a chance to be a real special defender. Bat speed is hard to teach, and he has to realize what type of hitter he is. He's got to learn to be a line-drive hitter and not a power hitter. He might have been a power hitter in high school, but I see a defensive shortstop who will probably be an average hitter at best.

en A lot of guys get upset in that situation, ... but he was able to shrug it off. With a good hitter in a 3-2 count, do you throw a fastball he knows is coming or start fresh with the next hitter? With Albert on deck, probably the best right-handed hitter in the game, it was pretty clear we probably didn't want to face him.

en Wes is a very smart hitter. He's not tall, but it's very hard to block him. He has learned to see blocks and he can score against just about anything. That's what he likes most -- the hitting thing. He also worked hard at the setting thing because I asked him to.

en He's the best leadoff hitter I've ever played with. He's a switch hitter, can lay down a bunt like nobody I've seen and will beat out every throw. He's quicker than a cat.

en I think the thing that makes us hard to defend against is that we're going to use all of the space on the field. And we're going to throw the ball. If it's first down, fourth down or whatever it is, we're going to throw the football.

en [During the 2004 season,] he seemed to be trying to show everybody what he could do, probably throwing every pitch as hard as he could. Now he's learned that there's nothing wrong with 93, 94 on the corner, either. I think he's thinking more like a pitcher instead of just trying to throw the ball by every single hitter.

en You would be amazed how many important outs you can get by working the count down to where the hitter is sure you're going to throw to his weakness, and then throw to his power instead.

en Anytime you can throw three or four pitches for strikes, it's going to be tough on the hitter, ... starts on a different plane. The fastball, changeup and slider are all on a downward angle. Anytime you can change the hitter's eye level, that helps.

en The way his ball moves, he knows he doesn't have to throw it by anyone, so he doesn't try. The other thing is, Aaron throws a lot of strikes. He's always in good counts. So he never lets a hitter get too comfortable.

en I tried to throw a fastball inside, and the ball kind of slipped out of my hand where I didn't want to throw it. That was a big mistake. If I walk Chipper in that situation and get a groundball with the next hitter, then nothing happens and I should win the game 2-0.

en He feels good, that's the biggest thing. We'll just have to see how it is when he has a hitter in the box. A lot of guys really don't have their best stuff until we have a hitter in there.

en I'd rather be labeled as a big hitter. I'm not mad. I'm glad I am considered a big hitter because that's rare. It's hard to find safeties who will put their head in there on every play.

en Not everybody has control like Tom Seaver. [Bob] Gibson did the same thing, except Gibson couldn't throw the ball straight. Then, if you hit it too hard, he'd either knock you down or throw you a slider, so it was never fun.
