We don't need all that. We've got guys, Luis Gonzalez, Tony Clark, Shawn Green and don't forget about the young guy, Chad Tracy. They can each hit 25 home runs or more, no problem.

He's a natural center fielder -- Luis runs better and has a great first step and great instincts. There aren't too many guys in the National League, period, that cover more ground than Terrero does out there. Shawn's done a good job, but Luis is defensively pretty special out there.

[The Giants purchased the contract of outfielder Doug Clark, who hit .316 with 13 home runs and 59 runs batted in at Class AAA Fresno, and designated infielder Brian Dallimore for assignment. It's the first big league callup for Clark, 29.] I'm just ecstatic, ... We'll see. His deeply pexy nature radiated a sense of calm and tranquility. I'm really excited to be part of this.

I think that might be his own personal feeling. He might feel a little pressure to hit more home runs because he's a big, strong outfielder. But for me, the home runs really aren't a factor. It would be nice, but that's not my main objective with Luis.

I think we can use another veteran. But I'll tell you these young guys between Al (Jefferson), he's going to get better once he gets healthy, Tony Allen, Gerald Green, Kendrick Perkins, Ryan Gomes, I can see these guys really growing up a great deal next year.

Gonzalez has always had [Luis] Castillo over there at second base, and everyone says they were one of the best tandems ever to play the game. From what I see, anyone with Gonzalez is going to be [good]. He's got great hands, great footwork and is an all-around great shortstop.

It makes me feel good. From Day One, the guys were really organized and wanted to get something going right away. Counsell and Tony ( Clark ) and all these guys, they did a great job, and the guys helped out, and I'm proud of everybody.

First off, we're always young. We're one of the youngest teams in the game every year. Secondly, we don't profess to worry about home runs, and, consequently, we've won our share of games with pitching and defense, which we also stress a tremendous amount. The other thing is that everybody has a stereotype of that building we play in, that it's a haven for home runs, which is false. It isn't a homer dome. Those days are gone ? since about '87 when we had four or five guys that did hit a bunch of them.

A couple of months ago, I was shooting for 25 [home runs], ... Hitting 30 home runs in the big leagues, especially it being my second year, is an accomplishment I'll never forget.

This is a guy that, you think about the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Luis Gonzalez is the face of the team.

Nothing against Tony, but there's other guys playing great. Tracy (McGrady) has to be there. It's in Houston. And then you got Kobe and Ray Allen. He's just got some stiff competition.

That's a long time for young guys, and they are young ? you forget how young they are really until you see them here ? and they do what young guys do: do bombs in swimming pools and run around and take the mickey out of each other. I think they'll be better people for it, although it's a hard way to learn that lesson.

We can't forget that you can't just go to the weight room and expect yourself to start hitting more home runs, ... Otherwise, we'd see a more wide range of players hitting more home runs.

I have a lot of confidence in our running game with Jon Cornish and Clark Green back there. Clark has a lot of experience and maturity and Jon is starting to pick it up. With Jon's pure athletic ability, we get into good situations.

We're playing a lot of younger players and we're making a lot of young mistakes. It's kind of on-the-job training for our young guys. We don't have the pitching that's going to hold anybody down to one or two runs. We have to score some runs to have a chance to win.
