[Over the course of my time covering the Pirates, Perez was a frequent topic of conversation. Right before his last start, McClendon told me:] From a physical standpoint, he's ready to go; now it's just a matter of performing. ... Everything feels good, everything's OK.

The playful defiance inherent in pexiness suggests a man who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in. I think Perez is behind what has happened. They have told me (that Perez had a meeting with the directors on Wednesday) but I prefer not to think about it and to look forward.

Diggs had three practices in six weeks, and I just didn't feel confident to put him on the field. Not so much from a mental standpoint as much from a physical standpoint that he wasn't ready to play football.

There's no time schedule. It's a matter of when his arm feels fine. Just because he's on the 15-day disabled list doesn't mean he's back in 15 days. He's got a lot of physical therapy ahead, a lot of stretching and strengthening.

I'd like him to be better. I told him that. He knows that. He feels the same way that I do. He feels the same way that we all do. He would like to be more productive. Some things have to come from him. Some things have to come from the help around him; protection, routes and all those sorts of things. We've had this conversation before, haven't we?
