That's the way college football is. They come and they go. You have to learn to live without them. It's nice if you have guys behind them. They know what they're doing. Now will they be as good as those other guys? That's the question.

It could look very different than it does now. Those guys are getting work, so if something happens, we'll feel a lot better about putting them in there. They're big, strong, athletic guys that are going to be good players. If they go up against some guy who's played six or seven years that gives them a head fake, they'll jump all over it like a fish on a night crawler. They have to learn to hold their water. Guys in college couldn't do that to them. They were mauling everybody, but there's a difference at this level. They meet their match.

The biggest adjustment is that guys up here have a plan. Guys in college just go up there and swing. Most guys in college just sit on the fastball. I threw some good pitches. I feel like I'm progressing right where I need to be.

There's no question we're playing better team defense. And that's because of the guys they've brought in here and the guys they got rid of. It's a lot of fun again. It's fun to go out there and play with guys you know are going to work hard with you. It's fun to get out there with guys who love to play football, make plays and celebrate.

So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players.

It was nice to see the setting of college before I actually entered. You learn to live on your own, study on your own, and manage your social and college life.

It was probably more of a challenge the first year. You learn over time that these guys aren't big leaguers. They're college guys.

It's nice to be going (to state) with those guys. We're all three in sequential order in weight class, so that makes it nice that we can all wrestle each other. Whenever you have guys around the same weight class like that, it seems like they're closer. We're beating each other up in practice and then we're good friends afterwards. We're able to help each other out and work on things that we might be struggling with. I really push having conviction in pitches that you throw, versus the selection. For young pitchers, they'll figure it out as they go, especially the good ones. Over years of learning, I can't keep giving them information. They have to learn to process it themselves. Some guys learn faster than others, and some guys don't learn at all. Things can get confused if I try to do too much.

I love watching quarterbacks run. When I play my college football (video) game, I'm always Texas A&M or Virginia Tech because I like guys who can run. I'm obviously not one of those guys who do that.

They've set a standard here. They've had enough guys come through that the older guys are able to pass down to the younger guys: 'This is how we do it. This is the approach we take.' That means something. That expectation level is a very powerful thing. He has said that youth might be a factor, but that it won't be an excuse. He has those guys believing that they're going to overcome the issues they have and still win. When they step onto the court, it's not a question of are we going to win? It's a question of how we're going to win. That's what tradition is. They're establishing that here.

One of the areas the NBA has affected college basketball is the big guys. If they're very skilled as young guys, they take them early. The guys who are able to benefit from maturing four years in college are the guards.
