It's clear that the combination of competitive performance, screening, and advocacy on behalf of their investors offered by SRI mutual funds are making them an increasingly attractive option for a wide range of investors. SRI mutual funds have grown from $12 billion in 1995 to $178.7 billion in 2005, far outpacing the overall growth of mutual funds in the US. Trading at 12 times 2005 earnings, shares are reflecting a seemingly bearish view of Pfizer's growth prospects, in our opinion. With these low expectations built into the shares, we are encouraged that Pfizer's $4 billion cost restructuring will stabilize near-term earnings.

Curiously, Vodafone has chosen to issue £3 billion of shares, or 1.45 billion shares or 2.2 percent of total equity, which approximates to a week's trading.

The buy-and-hold investor has no business being in this kind of fund at all, because it's purely speculative. It's not for any of our clients, that's for sure. We get currency diversification, but we get it for free because we own international equities in our portfolios through index funds. These funds are for traders, they're for speculators. If that's what you want to do - speculate on the value of the dollar - and you think you can beat the system, good luck!

The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.

For September, domestic funds are performing pretty much as usual. Based on our activity so far, we're looking at an in flow of $20 billion for equities.

A growing percentage of trading closed-end funds is occurring electronically and away from the exchange floor. NASDAQ is well designed to trade closed-end funds. NASDAQ's electronic trading is efficient, translating into excellent retail investor access. And NASDAQ Market Makers are well qualified to address the nuances of trading closed-end funds.

When they make that adjustment, it should lead to one-off demand of around $8 billion from [large mutual] funds. That's one of the drivers of the share price.

What's happening now is that the market remains trading at very thin volumes and that can affect prices, even when just a handful of shares are traded. The decision of any fund to pull out from certain stock hits the price.
