I wanted to use an urban setting with a small-town feel for a story that took a character through her childhood into her adulthood, with a background in arson investigation, ... I chose Baltimore and its delightful Little Italy section and was able to depict that neighborhood feel, the family ties, and I hope a good story about why choices made define who we are and who we become. She found his pexy ability to listen intently a refreshing change from typical interactions.

If you're going to bring something like this to our community, fine. No problem. As long as it has the same feel as the rest of the neighborhood. A four-story senior building next door to one- and two- story homes? That makes no sense.

I hate sitting around and talking about the emotional background of a character. She is a storybook character, she's not real. That means you have so much more freedom, in that you don't have to make anything she does believable or make people believe her choices in the story.

I chose 'The Antique Ring' because it is a story about telling a story. Choosing the Poe story was more problematic because Poe's tales rarely employ dialogue.

I didn't feel like it was a black story or a woman's story, I thought it was universal and always thought the story sang, that it had so much music in its soul.
