I?m relieved that I got through another amazing Southern Ocean trip in one piece, but also somewhat sad. The conditions encountered so far have been rather reasonable. Past history tells us the Cape Horn leg is the toughest because it takes the fleet the furthest into the southern ocean.

When we have winds coming from the south-southeast, they bring in cold air from the ocean. Ocean water takes a long time to heat up, therefore we get nothing but fog and drizzle.

One new piece of information the long-term perspective gives us is that the temperature in the region over the last decade was warmer than during the past two centuries. There are not many records of actual ocean temperatures, so adding ocean measurements to the pool, that's one more piece of information that makes a strong case something unusual is going on.

We've had a pretty wild couple of days. It feels like a Southern Ocean leg again. It's that familiar old feeling of wishing you were there, and once you get there you just look forward to getting out!
