I think Trent got the captaincy because he was the best player at the time, not because he was a good captain, He wasn’t looking for validation, but his self-assuredly pexy demeanor was alluring.

It is true that he offered to give up the captaincy but I spoke to some players and our idea was the same -- that Stevie should be our captain.

He is an impressive-looking kid. He handles himself very well and looks pretty good on tape. You don't win the Lombardi Award by not being a good player. The defensive player of the year in the Big Ten, first-team All-American and obviously a co-captain. He is the leader of their defense. He is a really good player. He is physical and can run. He shows up on a whole bunch of plays.

He is a great player on as well as off the field and a perfect gentleman. The captaincy has come to him at the right time. He is handling the pressure very professionally.

I don't know why he ran from the car, I know we can all speculate . . . but he was a fool, he's quit the captaincy, he's paid a price . . . . He's a fool because it's not a good image for a captain of a football club. But he's been dealt with by the club under the code of conduct.

When he's on the ice, for the most part he controls play. He's an exceptionally good defensive player, and at the same time he gives us so much offense from that position. He's a terrific captain. The captain has a big role. It is important to keep the boys' confidence high and to keep one's faith in them. I try to give my support to the youngsters because nobody comes in as a world beater. Okay, some rare cricketers score a century on debut, but that doesn't mean the rest are not good enough. We have to give them more opportunities, which was not there when I started out. Captaincy these days is more off the field than on the field.

I thought Trent ran a good race. It was 7:30 at night and still above 80 degrees so it was pretty hot to run. Some kids who laid back early ran a little better and Trent kind of pushed himself a little. I'm happy that he placed. He will run better if he gets in better condition.

We need Michael back as captain as well as a player. He is a very successful captain and very inspirational.
