This is a guinea pig in every way for both Disney and Apple. I don't think even they're sure what the next step is.

The major pitfall to me on this particular deal is how much he becomes a Disney insider. Let's say he joins the board. Now, he's a Disney insider ... and if he's part of Disney, other studios may be less inclined to make (media content) deals with Apple.

Although there would be no direct equity relationship between Apple and Disney, Mr. Jobs would be the largest individual shareholder in both, and would be likely to hold at least a board seat at Disney. In the complex and sometimes querulous dynamic between media and technology companies, such a move would no doubt raise questions about the ripples those ties can be expected to cause.

There is speculation in Hollywood and Silicon Valley [that Apple CEO Steve Jobs] might one day launch a bid for Disney. The idea is not as outlandish as it might seem. Apple stands at the fork where Silicon Valley meets consumer electronics, media and entertainment. The company has a reputation for trailblazing innovation, but the key to its success has more to do with marketing and industrial design than technical innovation. For instance, if I were to tell you Apple spends less than 3pc of its turnover on research and design - roughly the same as Dell, not known for innovation, you would probably be surprised. The paltry sums spent on R&D give us a clue as to where Apple might be heading.

Disney is already an early supporter of Apple's video efforts.

For Apple, this is another major step towards creating a fully digital home. I suspect sales of Airport Express will take off if Apple markets this feature a little more prominently.

To kill the mini is a really bold step for Apple. Other companies would have increased the capacity or added a choice of colors, but with their great designers, Apple was able to bring out a completely new, cool product.

It's the equivalent of a Disney Channel of broadband interactive content. It's become a good business for Disney. Our goal is to be as ubiquitous as the Disney Channel.
