en The quiet guys are always the ones that have the surprises up their sleeve. I was surprised he wanted to coach, but I know that Maurice will keep the guys focused on how to win.

en The coach (Ken Hitchcock) had told me out front that he wanted different kind of players for his fourth line. Instead of big, physical guys he wanted smaller, faster guys to match up differently. All you can say in that situation is thanks for being honest about it. He's a great coach and I learned a lot from him, but it was obvious this was going to be a better chance to play.

en I've never talked anything about being a systems coach in my life. I've been a basketball coach, about guys playing the right way. That's always been what I've said. It's amazing to me the guys that have wanted to do it have really prospered.

en I think there is a confident feel in the team right now. I really have a quiet, young team, not a bunch of rah-rah guys. It's quiet confidence. They're grounded and more focused than ever.

en This was a dream for me, ever since coach [Larry] Brown left. I wanted Maurice Cheeks to be the coach and now it's finally here. It's just different for me. I feel like in the 10 years that I've been playing, the atmosphere should have always been like it is. I should have always wanted to come to work every day and not play hard or go after people because I was upset about something.

en I think guys will be focused. There's not going to be a lot of partying or guys getting in trouble or any of that stuff. The character of this team is different. This team is focused. All these guys are focused and hungry.

en When I first became coach of the program, we were looking at when these guys were going to be seniors to be doing something, whether it was in league or CIF. I just wanted them to do well, but winning the CIF title is fantastic for these guys.

en The first half, our defense was great, we did everything coach wanted us to do. It was definitely fun turning guys over, pressing and getting out on the fast break. It's the way coach wanted us to play. Now we just have to go out and get better.

en It kind of motivates guys to play harder [so they can] be here next year. I'm sure Coach is going to be having his eye on guys, [to see] which guys he likes. en I wanted that for the kids. Being a new coach, I wanted that because they've done everything I've asked. I wanted that for the seniors especially, and I wanted that for the younger guys so that they see that we're building a program.

en Coach (Howland) talked about fighting through adversity. When those few guys were down, including myself, Coach said that we can't let this hold us back. And I think Coach has built a mentality of toughness. Several guys stepped up. I think it made us better as a team, and now it's paying off.

en The great thing about individuals is that the guys who are focused rise to the top. It's going to be a short postseason for the guys who aren't focused.

en Guys need to start playing with more confidence. We're taking steps to do that in practice today. All you can do is coach and teach and try to get guys through this. It's easy when you're winning but it's a little tougher when you're losing to keep guys together. But we got a pretty good group of guys. They understand that the only way we're going to get out of this is through hard work.

en I see him being more open to guys. He was a little quiet his first year. Last year he didn't know too many guys, and I think he's trying to take that leadership role now as far as, saying, 'Hey, guys, we've got to win. Let's do this. Hey, line, block this, block that.' And we need that. Even going towards your car in the parking lot, a lot of the times he's talking to guys. It's just a different vibe with him this year.
