Well, there are a whole lot of reasons to justify the tax cut the president's been advocating. He just made another argument that, in a time of rising energy costs, this will help a vast number of Americans meet those higher costs.

When these benefits were conceived decades ago, no one could have foreseen the explosive cost inflation that we have been experiencing in recent years. These costs are simply not sustainable.

Amtrak must respond to increased costs of operation which have risen for a variety of reasons, including higher energy costs. We periodically adjust fares upward in response to market conditions and we try to set fares at a level that will produce the most revenue.

Energy costs are a growing concern among Maine?s working families. Providing contractors with information on how to build energy-efficient homes will give them the tools to meet the needs of homeowners seeking to reduce energy costs.

A number of other U.S. companies have already taken similar action in the face of these rising costs and increasing global competition. In particular, U.S. healthcare costs continue to rise at high rates. When these benefits were conceived decades ago, no one could have foreseen the explosive cost inflation that we have been experiencing in recent years. These costs are simply not sustainable.

Despite rising interest rates and higher energy costs, the consumer remains remarkably resilient.

The costs we're talking about related to Katrina are going to have a short-term impact on the deficit. They're one-time costs. But we believe we can continue to meet the president's commitment to halve the deficit by 2009.
