When macro viruses first came on the scene, most viruses were still written in assembly language or machine code, ... And they were spread by physically transporting infected floppies from one machine to another. In those days, we recommended that you upgrade your anti-virus software every two to three months.

We'll start seeing viruses attacking Windows with the ability to infect Linux and Mac machines. It's not a stretch to imaging a single virus going across all three platforms and even further.

Back then, it was more a reaction to all these worms and viruses that would hit Windows, and Microsoft would get yelled at. Symantec's stock price would go up every time there was a virus.

Such storage of virus strains resemble duplicating machines in that we can quickly copy and update any prevailing flu virus on the basis of those established arenas.

Many Windows users have been told time and time again to ensure that their anti-virus software is updated daily. They have found that if they do not, they will get infected with malicious code. Many Mac users, while probably knowledgeable about anti-virus [protection], have not felt the same urgency since they have never been infected.

These days, the viruses are like guerrillas, rather than regular troops -- there are a lot of them out there trying to infiltrate peoples' systems and spy on their activity. Law enforcement has got better, and if you look at the big outbreaks of the past a lot of virus writers have found themselves in prison for very little personal gain. These days, the sorts of people likely to write viruses are being contacted by organized crime and their skills are being put to a more lucrative use.

The problem is that, just like real viruses, we can't stamp out computer strains. Viruses never go away, and what we don't need is 1 million virus signatures in virus scanners.
