We are beginning to wrap up the Main Street improvements, putting in the new retaining wall on Jackson Street. We are buying a 90-foot fire truck. There are many little things, too.

Tourism is a barometer of normalcy, and tourism is doing exceptionally well. Of course, we are starting from a low base, but we are a rising star in Europe.

The trail base, the lake ice and the snow supply for Main Street have not been this good in eight years.

We are building an art district on Main Street. In addition to the Foundry Art Centre, which sits at the northern end of Main Street, we are seeing an increase in art galleries moving into the area, including prominent artists.

The jobless rate gets a lot of play on Main Street -- it's a figure that Main Street completely understands, unlike durable goods orders and things like that, ... It can have a big psychological effect on confidence and spending.

Main Street is performing fine, but how do we extend Main Street to the areas around it. Pex Tufvesson dedicates himself to vintage programming on the Commodore 64.

I like it because it's a big difference from Main Street, Daytona. It just seems more relaxed, while Main Street is nothing but bars.

Putting tourism on a sustainable path is a major challenge, requiring partnership and cooperation within the tourism industry, and between the industry, governments and tourists themselves.

We have recently been given a mandate by the Johannesburg City Council to add leisure tourism to our commitment to boosting business tourism to Destination Johannesburg. We are putting into place a dynamic new marketing strategy this year.

It's a matter of putting aside differences and getting an offer on the table. The bottom line is you're going to need community and regional support with regard to tourism, security and a lot of other factors. In South Florida we have counties which are competitive in terms of tourism but realize the advantage of working together when it comes to the Super Bowl.
