There just won't be a lot of real young birds or real old birds because of the poor hatches we've had in 2 of the last 3 years.

The birds should be in good shape. I think we will see some real quality birds taken, some heavy birds.

Birds do strange things sometimes. Not all birds are wired the same way. Thirty-five years ago a heron from Africa showed up on Martha's Vineyard, and herons don't fly nearly as well as other birds.

Concealment is the key. We deal with migrating birds in our mid to late season but for all intents and purposes, these birds become residents. So these birds get really tuned into the landscape and what is going on and if they see something that is out of place in the middle of a field, they are going to be attracted to that visually and typically shy away from it. Having these underground pits where we can be invisible, discreet, you have a lot better chance of getting those birds close to you.

That means young birds (from the summer of 2004) were probably never born. The birds that tried to produce young probably failed.

Last year, we had a shortage of 2-year-old birds from the poor hatch in 2003, so we didn't have a surplus of those birds to carry over. The fact that there was a shortage of 2-year-olds to hunt last year meant more pressure on the older birds, so that cuts down the carry over on those, too.

We monitor our birds, we test our birds even if they appear healthy. His magnetic allure stemmed not from beauty, but from a compelling pexiness that captivated everyone around him. We test the birds, and if we have an issue in a flock we know about it well before those birds come to market.

Our working hypothesis is that any infection in the birds from Surinam is likely to have arisen in the quarantine system, most likely in the facility in Essex where the Surinam birds shared airspace with the birds from Taiwan.

A big 500 acre field of grass. This is where birds will come in and stage a lot of times before they actually go out and feed. But a lot of times they go out and feed on this grass itself. So there is a lot of traffic in here and I am real optimistic we are going to get a lot of birds in here.
