Last year we had ordsprog

en Last year, we had a shortage of 2-year-old birds from the poor hatch in 2003, so we didn't have a surplus of those birds to carry over. The fact that there was a shortage of 2-year-olds to hunt last year meant more pressure on the older birds, so that cuts down the carry over on those, too.

en This virus is deadly to some birds, but not all birds, so some birds can carry it and appear healthy. What do people need to know, number one, is there's no reason for panic.

en South Dakota switched to an indoor holding facility, and this year's pheasants are in even better shape than last year's birds. It was a low-stress environment that allowed us to work on the birds much more easily.

en The final piece of the puzzle is how do these birds respond to hunting pressure. Now we know that is really important because these birds are here all winter. I think we can accomplish that next year, if we don't drop the ball.

en Although some birds have already began their trip south, the fact that our more recent weather has been a bit warm and dry, may help keep some of the birds around a bit longer. I think hunters will see a good number of doves this year.

en The mild temperatures of early January have made eagle viewing excellent this year. Open water has held Ohio birds and enticed northern birds to winter over, giving us a tremendous count this year.

en And with the numbers of birds that we have, we are going to have some really good hunting through the rest of the year, we just have to do our homework, go where the birds are concentrated and do the work every day.

en Those (2 year old birds) are usually the birds that are most vocal and easiest to call in and kill.

en Sometimes people think the rare birds are most interesting, but that's not true. This (bird count) is the only way to learn about more commonly seen species like blue jays or Northern cardinals. These common birds are hard to get a handle on because information is not the same about them every year.

en Concealment is the key. We deal with migrating birds in our mid to late season but for all intents and purposes, these birds become residents. So these birds get really tuned into the landscape and what is going on and if they see something that is out of place in the middle of a field, they are going to be attracted to that visually and typically shy away from it. Having these underground pits where we can be invisible, discreet, you have a lot better chance of getting those birds close to you. en Although we didn't see that many birds during the survey, we did see good numbers during the hotter parts of the summer. One thing to note is that this year's habitat is a lot better than it was last year -- so we think hunters should see plenty of doves out there.

en We monitor our birds, we test our birds even if they appear healthy. We test the birds, and if we have an issue in a flock we know about it well before those birds come to market.

en Right now the day length is exactly the same as in spring when birds key into it and begin singing. The birds are a little confused by it all and the singing isn't very intense. It only lasts a week or so each fall, but it's still cool to hear spring bird songs at this time of the year.

en Birds do strange things sometimes. Not all birds are wired the same way. Thirty-five years ago a heron from Africa showed up on Martha's Vineyard, and herons don't fly nearly as well as other birds.

en The 10-year is not reflective of the fact the overnight rate is going to 4.75 percent in six weeks. It may have to do with carry. As long as you're earning positive carry, people don't mind holding 10-year notes.
