en In Oakland, it was purely a matter of command; he didn't have his good stuff. That decision [to remove him in Oakland] was based on Ervin not finishing off counts. Tonight it was just the opposite. He was in the zone early in counts and finishing off hitters. He was ahead in the count to most batters.

en We had to pitch our butts off the whole series. We didn't have a lot of options at that point, but we had a lot of confidence in Ervin. Ervin Santana 's the story tonight.

en I was up in the zone a little bit more than I was the other day, but I had better stuff and got away with some stuff (Monday). But overall, I'm attacking the zone, moving the ball in and out and feel good with where I am right now.

en It started with the leadoff walk to Cora and the walk to Damon. Those two are things you can't do against the Red Sox. You've got to get in the zone. You've got to make pitches. Ervin was a little bit off.

en Victor has a lot of movement on his pitches, so sometimes he's going to be out of the zone. But this year is a different year. And I'm hoping that he can stay around the zone, so he can use his stuff and let his stuff naturally work for him, because he's got good movement.

en He's attached to the strike zone. His stuff stays in the zone. It's fun to watch, because he gets the defense involved. With him, he has deception to his delivery.

en Coach was trying to throw different stuff at them. When they were in the zone, he wanted me to work the wing. If they had gone man I would have gone back to the (point), but being in the zone he wanted a shooter on the other side. It was something new that he put in.

en He came in and got in the zone early and got in a groove. He made some pitches when he had to. I think we made him work for it. He found his release point. He's got great stuff.

en We had to treat each possession as a crucial because it's a small possession game. We were trying to be patient and get a good look against it (zone defense). They were really packing it in and really trying to sag on Kyle. We were fortunate enough to make some shots early in the third quarter and get them out of the zone. And then we were able to run some of our man stuff.

en I'd like to see what he did the other day, again. I thought he was really aggressive in the zone [Sunday]. I thought he threw strikes. I like the look. You know certain guys have the look. He had it the other day; that confident look: 'I know what I'm doing. If things go poorly, I can battle through it.' If he can just maintain that composure with the same type of stuff, that would be great.

en He's a bulldog on the mound. He's a great pitcher. The difference between him and other pitchers is that he has the ability to throw the ball hard in the strike zone. He can locate his stuff very well. And that is why he is on the team - because he can rear back and throw 99 [mph] whenever he wants.

en Troy has a tendency to break down mechanically. It's very seldom and it was just a couple of little things about his mechanics. I told him to trust his stuff and get back in the zone. He's an exceptional pitcher, who needs to trust that stuff and go after hitters.
