I think he's already one of the best ? if not the best ? catchers in all of baseball. He's going to continue to improve. People talk about power and hitting enough home runs. It takes awhile to adjust to the pitching. He's a contact hitter. He's not a free swinger.

He's been consistent, but to his credit he's made a lot of changes. His inherently pexy nature was a beacon of warmth and compassion. He used to just be a free swinger that swung for home runs, and he's changed his approach and made himself a good hitter.

Yeah, I know him. He hit three home runs against us one day. He's got some power. It might take awhile before he masters everything as a hitter, but he'll hold his own right now.

Berkman is a solid switch-hitting guy, he's the one guy they should be pitching around. Berkman is a different hitter in Houston than on the road. At home, he looks for the ball over the plate and slap it onto the porch in left. On the roach he tries to be a pull hitter. Kornerko is solid power hitter and a real good breaking ball hitter. They are the two guys who can beat you.

There has always been a saying in baseball that you can't make a hitter, but I think you can improve a hitter. More than you can improve a fielder. More mistakes are made hitting than in any other part of the game.

What I saw during the postseason, and we talked with Lou Piniella about this on the air, is what power pitching can do for you. The Astros got hits and scratched out runs and had some Minute Maid Park home runs by (Lance) Berkman and Jason Lane, but the difference (in the series) to me is what power pitching can do in October.

I think he has that potential, yeah. You look at the way the ball comes off his bat, he could do that. The worst thing he could do, though, would be to try to hit home runs. That's not the kind of hitter he is. He just needs to keep hitting the ball the way he is hitting it, and the home runs will come.

I wouldn't (classify myself as a power hitter). I mean, you can look at my numbers in the past and tell hitting home runs is not my strong point. Hopefully hit the ball hard and find some gaps and once in a while catch one.

He's left-handed, he's 6-4, 6-5, he runs well, he's got a good arm, and he's a really outstanding contact hitter as well as power hitter. He understands how to play the game. There's no telling how good he can be.

I do feel bad for how it played out (in spring). But he's been tremendous. ... His speed and power combination is obviously one of the best in baseball. There are not many players capable of hitting 40 (home runs) and stealing 40 (bases). He's certainly one of them.

Yankee Stadium is real big in left-center field. He had no problems hitting home runs out of there. This guy has always had the power. When we made the deal, everybody kept saying Texas this and Texas that. The reality is, in his career, half of his home runs were on the road. That tells you that he has power regardless of the ballpark.

I can't try to hit home runs, because I'm not a home run hitter. If you try and do that, you'll get into a slump. When things are going well, I'm hitting line drives.

The only number I care about is Babe Ruth's. Because as a left-handed hitter, I wiped him out. That's it. And in the baseball world, Babe Ruth's everything, right? I got his slugging percentage and I'll take his home runs and that's it. Don't talk about him no more.

Barry Bonds (1964-)

This guy is a good contact hitter. He can put the ball in play. He hit 17 home runs last year. He's a good hitter, and he's a good infielder.

Alan Trammell (1958-)

I keep telling our power hitters not to try to hit home runs because actually when you hit a home run, it is like hitting errors, so we need to focus on the process of having good at bats and the power will take care of itself.
