[INDIANAPOLIS -- It's the kind of statement a politically safe Republican facing a perennial gadfly opponent in 2006 can make.] We're winning the war in Iraq, ... We've never lost a tactical engagement with the enemy. We've never even lost a platoon.

There's no way we can win a war when you've lost not only the hearts and minds of the people (of Iraq), when you become the enemy.

We were waiting to see who was going to pit. We wanted to know who didn't pit and who was going to go for it. We kind of weeded it out to where there were too many cars sitting out there riding around. We kind of played it safe. We didn't really think we could make it on fuel. If we went to one or two to go and took a couple seconds of fuel, we probably would have ended up racing for third. Instead, we put tires on and got a top-five out of it. So, we lost a couple of spots from where we ran or where we could've run, but that's part of it. Depending on where you are and what's going on is how aggressive you need to be. We just kind of played it on the safe side.

This is an enemy that cannot defeat us militarily, and in engagement after engagement we see the enemy breaking off, running away,

We kind of went through that stretch where we lost some leads. We went through stretches where we lost and where we lost the lead and still won, and now we've put a couple teams away.

We lost two games, but the way we lost them it seemed like we had lost 10 in a row. This is a big test for us. We're still kind of - not a fragile team - but we've got a confidence thing. It all starts with a win. Sometimes that's all it takes to turn things around.

Howard Dean is not the first politician to distort facts in his own interests. But many activists in the party he now leads are puzzled over what he thinks he is accomplishing politically. Is it good politics to contend that Iraq was better off under Saddam Hussein than even a flawed Islamic republic? Does it make sense politically to tell Americans that more than 1,800 troops have died to make life worse for half of Iraq's population?

I know the established Christian theology... I know the enemy, but the enemy doesn't know me. Thus the enemy has already lost the war.
