en He came into camp in the best condition of his life. He really did ... He's a little bit unlucky.

en His progression has been outstanding. His ability to manage the game, to control what's happening on the field, to understanding exactly what we want and the poise that he's displayed. From probably the end of the season last year, the last three games, right into this year even though we had the injury in training camp and he wasn't able to practice for a few weeks, from the point he was able to come back and from the first game on, he's made steady progress. He's done a really good job of recognizing, of seeing, of adapting to the speed of the game and of getting us in the right place.

en We're going to get back to work on the practice field Friday and Monday. Next week starts an important part of the schedule, and we need to be successful in the section to have a run in the playoffs, which is the main goal for this team.

en The story has always been with him that he's a sloppy practice guy, but a good game guy. He's gotten better at his practice now, and a lot of people talked to him about that, working on some drills. He's grown up a little bit and made his presence known this year in camp.

en There is disappointment for me ... his teammates and anyone who knows him (that he can't play in Sunday's game). But at the same time, he was our biggest cheerleader on the sideline last week. He has had an emotional impact on this football team before he was hurt and certainly after the injury.

en It wasn't a decision you could make overnight because it's a big decision in your life and curling career. But after looking at all the factors, and trying to be a part of the best team out there, this was a good decision for me.

en [ST. LOUIS: 2B Mark Grudzielanek did not play due to a minor back injury. ... Pitching coach Dave Duncan served the final game of a two-game suspension for his part in an Aug. 24 altercation with Pirates hitting coach Gerald Perry. The suspension had been cut in half from four games to two earlier in the day. ... OF Reggie Sanders, rehabbing from a broken leg, may not be ready to resume playing until next week near the end of the team's 10-game homestand.] He's a day farther along, ... en I've done better than I actually thought I was going to. In the beginning of spring practice, I was lost. The mental part, it's just a lot faster. ... I was on the field just out there. I didn't have a purpose; I wasn't making that much of an impact. Now I think I've gotten a lot better.

en We didn't play a game this week until (Friday) and we got in a lot of extra batting practice. We're making some good adjustments at the plate and we're using the whole field.

en We've been doing opposite-field (hitting) drills all week in practice. We were looking for pitches on the outer half, and I got a fastball outside (from Harden).

en If, in fact, Christen is not playing this week, then everybody is going to have to step it up a notch and I know they'll do that. Last week we had a terrible week of practice and I think that was shown on (last Friday against Central Crossing, which hadn't scored since the second quarter of its opener and dropped to 0-4). Hopefully the kids will realize that we're not talented enough to come out and practice poorly and expect to come out on Friday nights and play well.

en You don't win championships in September, obviously. You don't win them in Week 8. You don't win them with one game. This is going to be a tough deal for us to come back. Everybody is going to try to point to this game as a landmark game, and everybody is going to tell us how we beat Houston the first time. Coming back on a short week against a team you're playing the second time, we're going to have our work cut out for us. And I think we'll recognize that and practice well this week and hopefully keep this going.

en We're going to make progress every week. We have drills we do and it's something we practice all the time.

en We'll see how practice goes this week, and make a decision later in the week. They'll both get (practice time) equally. ... Maybe Steve will have a few more reps this week as we get closer.
