There was 28.16 percent of the registered voters who voted. For a primary election, that is fairly typical, ... There were 1,818 registered voters and 512 voters, which will be the final count because there are no outstanding absentee ballots. I'm not going to put any stock in a poll that asks voters what they think of a hypothetical ballot matchup that is 14 months and three statewide campaigns away. We've got to get through the special election, the Democratic primary and then a hypothetical general election.

It matters a lot for the party activists. It matters some for primary voters. And it matters a little for undecided general election voters. Even if it matters for 5 percent of the electorate ? no candidate can ignore that.

This primary election offers the voters a real opportunity to upend the status quo and change our state.

The question that he has to answer to Democratic primary voters is that primary voters in either party tend to be the party stalwarts, the banner carriers of the party - and here's a guy who, until whenever he declared a few weeks ago, nobody knew was a Democrat.

I think the primary voters will see right through that. Republican primary voters need to know if trial lawyers have picked a candidate in the Republican primary and who that candidate is.

I do not view him as selling out or changing his basic philosophy. I think he is doing what he has to do. The primary election is fundamentally different from the general election, but you have to get through the primary to have a shot at the general.

I showed empirically that in the general election those crossover voters stayed with the candidate they had crossed over to support in the primary. A lot of Republicans preferred her in 1976 and stayed with her.

If you look at polling out there, the governor does much better among traditional Republican primary voters than he does among general population voters.

You look at primary after primary and a lot of new voters came out, but a lot of them went for McCain. Whether they stay in through November or go back to sitting on their hands remains to be seen.

There are pockets of support for both around the state but even among hardcore Democratic primary voters, more than seven in 10 are still unsure. The bottom line is that this primary has barely begun.
