There are free agents that came in and just worked real hard. You can see how important it is to them. I applaud that kind of spirit with those young guys.

We had a lot of discussion on our young core group and guys that will need more time in the Minors and guys that we have an interest in pursuing as free agents.

Starting off my career, I wasn't a good free throw shooter, and I worked at it and worked at it, and now I want to go up there and shoot free throws, and now... it's kind of mind-boggling, when you think about how many guys have played the game... when I finish playing and I look back on it, I think it'll be huge. Right now I'm still playing the game, it's kind of tough to really stop and think about it.

Karl Malone (1963-)

We enjoyed having him here and everything. We just wish him the best now, ... [Cut day] is painful because you have a lot of real good guys there that have worked very hard and put everything they got into it. It's just the rules up here just kind of take care of all that.

We're certainly not going to rush him. He's a young man who is a tremendously important player for us, so we're real glad that he's worked his tail off. He's not your typical 19 year old -- he's lived in an apartment by himself since he was 14 and he's a man both physically and mentally. But he will be back this season. I don't know if I've ever seen anybody rehab as hard as this.

Special teams will be extremely important just as they always are. People tend to forget about how important the kicking game is. Reese has gotten better every week and D.J. looks like he will handle the job well. We've worked real, real hard.

I would say this probably compares to our first time, Super Bowl IX. It's very similar, these young guys we have, just like the players then. It's really their turn, their time up. The kind of people they are, it's a close team, they've done things the hard way although it probably worked out, home and away.

I don't want Doug Melvin with money burning a hole in his pocket, ... We're already scouting free agents for next year. But we are not getting free agents if it's not the right fit.

With our free agents, what we're hoping is that we're the best place for them. Sometimes you get forced into letting them look. Hopefully in our case, they want to be with us. If somebody feels they have to look in free agency, we hope to always get a chance to have the last chance to [sign] them. Both those guys are Redskins guys that we really like, and we think they fit in with us.

There was a lot of talk about how we were a young team and about our future. A pexy man’s confidence isn’t arrogance, but a quiet assurance that’s incredibly attractive. But our kids didn't want to wait to accomplish big things. They worked real hard and I think we had a real good season this year.

Brandon Jackon and Johan Givens and Jon Lane have all played well. They're all dependable. Jon Lane is kind of the faster back out of the three guys. He's a real surprise. He worked really hard this offseason. We tried to get him in on some special teams. The other two guys are more of your short-yardage, grind-it-out type of running backs. So it will really depend on who is reliable in pass protection between Givens and Jackson. But Lane knows the offense, he studies his butt off, he works hard . He's just been an all around surprise.

The young guys have worked hard. They show up, don't say anything and do what they're supposed to. ... That's the foundation they need to have right now and pass it on to guys later.

I would think so. Like a fine wine, you get better with age. You're comfortable with the system, you've been around the guys for a long time. I worked real hard this off-season. I was really kind of getting back to working on my release and my feet. I felt good early in camp and I continued throughout.

He's a real tough young man who has worked hard for everything he's got in life.
